Let's Celebrate a World Record by One of Our Own!

We're a little late with this one, but what the heck.

In addition to the World Record Horace Ashenfelter set at the 1952 Olympics in the Steeplechase, we have another World Record Holder in our ranks.  Thanks to our great friend from the Oregon Ducks and the West Coast, Dan Martinez, we have these great photos and stats of the 1978 AIAW 5000 M Championships.

Kathy Mills gapped the field by 35 meters in the first lap and never let up!
  • 400 M - 67.1
  • 1 Mile - 4:48.3
  • 2 Mile - 9:55.6 (5:07.3)
  • 3 Mile - 15:03.9 (5:08.3)
  • 5000 M - 15:35.5   Collegiate Record, American Record, World Record!

Also in the race and finishing 7th was Kris Bankes in 16:12.0, the 10th fastest American all-time at the time.

  3. I was in charge of officials at that meet. Wonderful experience. Great memories of the meet. I helped run meets there for three years, starting in the spring of 1977 to spring of 1979.
