PSU is Relay U and a Return to a Happy Valley Marathon!

The newest Track and Field News is out and proclaims what we all knew all along.

Penn State is Relay U!

With first place in both the 4 x 800 and the Distance Medley, the PSU Men scored 34 total points (10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1) and (5-4-3-2-1 for the shuttle hurdles).
  • #1 4 x 800  =  10 points
  • #4 4 x Mile =  7 points
  • #4 Sprint Medley  =  7 points
  • #1 Distance Medley  =  10 points
Second Place was a tie with St. Augustine and Texas A & M with  28 points.
Fourth Place was a tie with Florida and Oregon with 25 points.

And my heart skipped a beat when I got the news that the Marathon will be returning to Happy Valley this year for the first time since 1984.

  1. You've managed to combine the best recent news about PSU T&F with the worst memory I have about my time as a Nittany Lion - the dreaded NVTC Marathon of '78 (or '79?- I've repressed it). First and last marathon ever. Wyatt and I had nervous tics for years afterwards. That was no way to treat 800/1500 guys. LTM

  2. I at least hope you remember running the first 20 with me holding you back. It would have been much worse at the end if I hadn't "helped" you. My marathoning advice has always been "Start slow and taper off".

  3. I have the results of the 78 marathon in a box in the attic. Looked for then in Feb. to celebrate the 35th anniversary. Couldn't find them.

  5. I had to run like heck at the finish to beat Liz Berry (Larsen) and Coach Groves. 3 weeks after pneumonia, so I was pretty happy with a 2:41 or so. All 3 Milers (Mangan, Rapp, Wyatt)I helped pace beat me though. Scharsu won. Snow covered roads the whole way.

  6. Liz ran 2:41.10 in the second NV marathon in 78. I ran the one in Feb. but worked a water station in Dec. What sticks in my memory is a frat guy who ran about 4 hours. As soon as he finished, his 'brothers' handed him a bottle of champagne, which he proceeded to chug. Definitely not the way to replace body fluids.

  8. Ok, you made me dig up the archives, damn you Baskwill. You did escort Wyatt, Rapp and me through 20 miles (61 minutes through 10 miles; 1:56 through 20) - "last 6 miles very painful" was my log entry. 2:35 for 6th place. Wyatt was in front of me, not sure where Rapp ended up.

    Someone explain to me how two sub4 guys benefit from a marathon?

  9. I see I was 2:40:52 for 11th place after collapsing over the last 6. I see my pneumonia illness came back after the effort and it took me two weeks to get back to any semblance of a runner. And yes, I held the milers back at the start and we picked it up at each 5 mile mark until the 20th. We tried then too, but I dropped right after. We were in 3rd through 6th place at the time with Scharsu in sight. My log said I didn't expect to finish at all, so I guess I surprised myself.
