A World Record For A Penn State Track Alumni (Golfer)!*

Controversy and confetti greeted Elizabeth Herndon as she broke the tape at the First Beer Mile World Championships  (and Here) yesterday.  Professor Liz was a Nittany Lion XC runner while earning her PhD.

Flotrack sponsored the event and had many hassles along the way.  Local opposition to the event because of the alcohol connection meant a last minute venue change and now controversy as to the application of the rules...   As if an underground sport should have rigid rules...

This whole thing is eerily similar to the origins of NASCAR.  That all started with southern "good ole boys" tinkering with their cars so as to outrun the cops and revenuers on their tails looking for the moonshine in their trunk.

Elizabeth's time of 6:17.76 breaks the old world record by a "healthy" margin.  (See what I did there?)   She actually celebrated her feat by going for pizza and beer.

*Please, never drink and drive.
