My father was at the game that highlighted Babe Ruth's final appearance in uniform in 1948, just before throat cancer claimed him. He relates no one at the stadium could understand a word he said.
In a previous post, we learned that Greg Fredericks was in attendance at Wilt Chamberlain's 100 point night in Hershey PA.
The closest I have come to these was being at The Vet with my dad and brother when Pete Rose tied Stan Musial for the National League hit crown. He was matched against the Astros Nolan Ryan that day and "The Express" struck him out 3 straight times after that, something Pete only had happen twice in his career. The Baseball Strike started the next day, so Pete had to wait.
Does anyone else have another iconic moment?
I was there when Paul Souza jumped 7'4" at the indoor track once!!!
ReplyDeleteDoes that count?
7' 4" in the Ice Palace is nothing to sneeze at. If he had shaved his head back then it would have been 7' 5"!
ReplyDeleteI saw Bob Gibson no-hit the Pirates at Three Rivers in 1971 and saw Alan Scharsu outkick Sydney Maree and John Gregorek at Dogwood (DMR) in 1980!
ReplyDeleteRichard Olsen (SMU I think) putting a hammer in lane 3 on the far side of the track at Dogwood; Jud Logan having one bounce off the astroturf at Tad Gormley stadium, over the 10' cyclone fence and into the stands at the '92 Oly Trials in New Orleans; Kevin McMahon hit the steel work on the freight rail line at Penn Relays, just to name a few.
ReplyDeleteWas at Franklin Field for the Eagles-Bears game in which Tom Brookshier suffered badly broken leg, ending his football career and starting him on road to broadcasting career.
ReplyDeleteAlso at FF, saw Ligouri-Ryun mile.
And saw Greg Fredericks run Centre County's first sub-four.
