1,000 Mile Reflections

Our very own Director of Fun Teddy Quinn put some thoughts together after some time has passed from the 1,000 Mile Relay to benefit The Life Back on Track Scholarship, part of the Kevin Dare Foundation.

An excerpt:
Leaving a team and a support network like Penn State track and field was very hard for me. It’s a special group and it’s very hard to leave. But for this run, we were all back on a team. We had uniforms and sponsors and gear. We had organization and an itinerary. We had support, we had publicity and we arrived at Penn State to a hero’s welcome. These were very special days for all of us, and I will always remember these 95 hours of running, when 10 individuals, supported by 1,000’s more, came together and accomplished something so tremendous that it was worth all the pain our bodies could endure.  I’ve been reminded of the strength of the human spirit, the power of self-belief and the abilities that lie deep within all of us to overcome tremendous obstacles. And, for that, I am ever grateful to this run, this team and Kevin Dare.

"Tee to Greens" Can Be an Effective Training Workout for Cross Country Runners

It was one of those workouts guys like me really hated.  For those who don't know, it involves an interval workout on the golf course where you run at near race pace from the tee to the green, then circle the green at a jog, heading on to the next tee for the next repeat. What always happened for me, and a few others who fell behind after a few repeats, was that we would end up running the whole thing at near race pace trying to catch back up to guys like Alan, Tom, John, Jeff and Larry.  Needless to say, this is not an effective training regimen.  Running 26:00 for 5 miles on Wednesday was sometimes followed with a 26:15 on Saturday!

So to help those out there who need some guidance on the proper use of this particular training technique, Founder Clark Haley sent me this great video explaining it all.  It even works for middle-aged, out-of-shape golfers, which makes it doubly great for our group.  Pay attention to the gentleman's unique running style here, incorporating an upper body workout in with the cardiovascular interval.

I Was the Only Adult in America Who Didn't Shop on Black Friday

Apparently, I am a relic of the past.  Forgotten and alone.  Desolate of desire.  A hermit who refuses to associate with others of his species during the most important day of the year.*  Instead, I took the opportunity to up my mileage on the treadmill every day during my 3 days off!  Two-a-days to pad my yearly mileage.

Image is not a wholly accurate representation of me on the treadmill.  I never wear a head-band.

Even Smarty-Pants Physicists Make Mistakes

IQ is a way of measuring the intelligence of a human as compared to others.  With the average almost always adjusted to 100 and a standard deviation of 1595% of us have an IQ between 70 and 130. Most Physicists are above that number, but Current Events make me wonder.

This guy has an IQ above 130.  Well above 130.  So what accounts for the 4 year prison sentence he received from an Argentine Court recently for smuggling 4 lbs. of cocaine?

Why, a woman, that's what. IQ is certainly not the end-all measure of someone's smarts!

She's not Helen of Troy, but he'll have 4 years to let that sink in.

More Photos Stolen From the Internet: With a Recipe to Boot

Photo stolen from Cody Edling.  Riding a balloon is another one of those things that isn't on my "Bucket List".

Photo stolen from Clay Shaw, who takes some of the best running photos in the world.  Let's make him an honorary Penn State Track Alumni Golfer for this one showing Kara Milhouse winning the Race for the Diamonds in Berwick on Thanksgiving Day. Check the previous post's comments for some additional Lions who own a diamond!

Clay has run a marathon on every continent and is currently completing the second marathon in every state!

And this one is for the Birthday Boy Ron Moore, who will become our group's co-Physicist when he golfs with us at this year's reunion. (?)  Photo stolen from W&M friend Brian Mount.

And here's another stolen from Brian:

But I'm from Dover Area High School, so I don't know about the evolution thing!  Just kidding people, but 1/2 my high school friends would be offended by this one.

And here's a recipe for making an Egg McMuffin at home.

This is a photo I took myself!  It shows an actual mug given away the very first day that McDonalds sold an Egg McMuffin in 1972.*

Turkey Trots are Everywhere

(Thanks to Group Friend and W+M Alum Brian Mount for the photo!)

My family is off to the York Turkey Trot.  This year they will have more than 4,000 (4,126 to be exact.)  runners in downtown York, a place where other races are lucky to get a couple hundred.  There is something about running on Thanksgiving morning that appeals to people who normally don't think about running at all. I'll be on the treadmill again while they are out there (to the chagrin of noted New England Physicists!) keeping The Streak alive.  I have been retired from all racing since 1997, at least!  (There will be more on The Streak in the next 2 weeks.)

My finest run ever was at a Turkey Trot in Millersville in 1976.  This was a 10-miler and at the 5 mile mark I felt better than I ever had (and I suppose since!) so I picked up the pace appreciably.  I finished behind 3 others just ahead of me. 51:11 barely edges out my best 10K at PSU, where I was lapped twice by my idol Greg Fredericks.  I couldn't quite catch them in 1976 either , although I was gaining.  It turned out great anyway when I won a turkey afterward.

Other great Thanksgiving Day events are held just about everywhere.  None is better than the Run for the Diamonds in Berwick PA.  Past winners include Hannes Kolehmainen and Jim Thorpe.  Many PSU Track Alumni Golfers have won diamonds at the event.  Are you one of them?  Let us know in the comments.

Greg also shows up on the greatest Berwick Marathon of all-time! It was a duel with Pete Pfitzinger.  Greg ended up in 2nd, but it was the second fastest ever finish at the event.

Pfitz vs. Fredericks: In Berwick’s version of Smokin’ Joe Frazier vs. Ali, the 1980 Berwick race attracted former Penn State star Greg Fredericks who had once set an American record for 10,000 meters and up-and-coming Cornell grad Pete Pfitzinger. Pfitzinger (who went on to represent the U.S. in two Olympic marathons) hammered the climb to Summer Hill (a 5:36 mile from two to three!), with Fredericks attempting to stay close. “I made a move just when a helicopter was close overhead and I could not hear Greg,” Pfitzinger remembers. “But I just kept pushing as hard as I could…” Pfitzinger’s incredible time of 43 minutes, 21 seconds was the end result. It is still the course record, with Fredericks’s 43:41 holding steady as the second-best Berwick blast in history.

And let's not forget PSU Track Alumni Great Horace Ashenfelter III's Thanksgiving Day 8K Classic in Glen Ridge NJ. Anyone ever run this one too?

Addendum: Kara Milhouse won a diamond today in Berwick! (Next step: Get her to golf with us!)

Here's another one!

Happy Thanksgiving

"Oh my God, there he is."

Give thanks that this turkey is not needed for your feast. Cause he ain't cooperating.

PETA wishes you wouldn't eat a turkey or any other animal, ever.  I usually send them a Slim Jim when they ask me for money.  No offense, I'm just trying to change their mind like they are trying to change mine. America is a wonderful place. I hope that continues for a very long time. I even put links to both sides of the issue right here on the blog with it all.!

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.

Some Sad News With A Snippet of Zen

Steve Bongivengo, keyboard player with Paul Souza and the Velveteen Playboys passed away this past weekend.  Steve was a fellow Penn State graduate and I got to meet him at the last Arts Festival where the Playboys were the headline band.  My condolences to all involved.

And here's Steve on the right in his PSU days Live at The Scorpion!  Check out Paul with hair and another PSU Track Alumni Golfer in this great photo from yesteryear.  Take your guess in the comments below!!!

Here's a little bit of Outdoors Goodness from Tom Walchuck way out there in Alberta.  That's in Canada.  Sort of like America's Attic.  We don't get there often, but there sure is some cool stuff up there when we finally climb the stairs to have a look.  They also have the finest coffee and donuts in the world. But you need a Passport now!

Friend of Group to Run "Last Suffer" and Eclipse 100,000 Miles

Friend of the Group and Native Philadelphian Mike Fanelli is lacing them up for his very last marathon tomorrow at the Philadelphia Marathon.  He has dubbed this the "Last Suffer".  He will also surpass 100,000 miles soon, possibly during the race!  Our hats are off to Mike.  I have promised the wine connoisseur a bottle of Running With Scissors  wine for the feat.  Now I have to figure out how to get it to him.

NCAA Finals and Preliminary Reunion Itinerary

Sam Masters will toe the line as an at-large bid in the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Louisville on Saturday.  He will be joined by the Number 9 Ranked Women's team under Mid-Atlantic Coach of the Year Beth Alford-Sullivan. There is even a live stream of the event.

A flawless phone consultation was held with many of the doers and shakers of the Reunion Event, and even I was included!  Founder Clark Haley, Coach Sullivan, Director of Operations Jess Riden, Nittany Lion Club Liaison Ken Brinker and Varsity "S" Club's Clint Eury hammered out the rough outline of next year's stellar event.

Among the Highlights:

Keep the date Open!  May 17, 18, 2013.
  1. Friday Reception 7:00PM.  Possibly at The Lion's Den again.  This was a great event last year and should draw even more this year.
  2. Saturday Alumni "Run" and Team Practice, at the lovely hour of 9:00AM.  Munchies, coffee and good cheer will abound.  Let's see if we can beat the 40 or so last year who dared to run the campus loop with the team! Although not a step of running is required to have a good time here.
  3. A Climb of Mt. Nittany to plant a team flag for those not willing to braves the rigor of the Golf Tourney.  Likely at 12:00 Noon or 1:00PM.  This is often followed with a trip to the Creamery.
  4. The Coach Harry Groves Golf Tournament is the Hallmark Event and the one that started it all.  This gives anyone the ability to be immortalized on the Coach Groves Memorial Cup despite having no golfing ability at all!!!!  We are hoping to move up the start time this year at the Elks Club Course.
  5. A Rewards Dinner and Celebration at the Indoor Track at 7:00PM on Saturday.  Group Officers absolutely guarantee awards this year!  There will be raffles and possibly another great complimentary gift from PSU Track.
  6. A variety of Speakers are being wooed by those in charge and we hope to have a surprise or two in store for everyone.  Anyone with suggestions only need to send word my way for a thorough hearing.

Todays Meeting of the Track Alumni Minds Won't Quite Be a Neils Bohr/Albert Einstein Debate

There will be a phone conference today between the PSU Track Office and the various Idiots here among the Track Alumni Golfers to iron out the details for the Second Annual Penn State Track Alumni Reunion and the 12th Annual Coach Harry Groves Golf Tournament.

I'll pass along points of interest and generally promote the whole thing right here on the blog with it all, including references to the origins of Quantum Mechanics.

The Old School Stopwatch Still Runs

These two PSU Track and Field Retirees look in very good shape to me.  One could still kick your butt when you misbehave and the other used to be a decathlete!

Coach Bill Whittaker and Coach Groves strike a pose.

Heading into the Championships, the Lady Lions now rank 9th in the Nation, with momentum.

RIP Dr. John Lucas

With my limited internet access I am not able to adequately express the respect and admiration I had for the man.  Suffice to say, I will say prayers for his family and remember him as a truly great man.

Here's some previous posts on Dr. Lucas:

And here's the PSU Official Release of the News.

A Fine Finish Indeed

Congrats to the Women's team for their NCAA Regional victory yesterday.  Another beautiful finish to both the race and the season.  PSU waited until the last miles before passing Villanova and Georgetown.  Coach Alford-Sullivan and Coach Gondak really did a remarkable job getting them ready for the Big Race.  Keep it going!

The Men's Team placed 5th in the race. Sam Masters qualified individually for the Championships.

I'm on limited Internet Access for the weekend, so I have t wait to post some purloined photos.

Addendum: Here's the purloined fotos I promised.  These are from PSU Track Alum golfer John McGraw.  Thanks!

Ten Questions: Irish Edition

That's Luke Watson tucked behind the late Ryan Shay (RIP) in his prior life as a "Fighting Irishman".

Those keeping up with this blog know he's been a fairly prominent figure here despite never running a step for the Nittany Lions (until the 1,000 Mile Relay!).  I have always said that a Penn State Track and Field Alumni Golfer can be anyone, and Luke exemplifies that as well as anyone on Earth.

We first met in the early stages of our efforts to energize and spread the word on our group with this blog.  He introduced himself to me at a Alumni function and impressed me right away with his intensity, intelligence and overall "goodness".  I can't imagine anyone better to represent our group.

Luke is a sub-4 minute miler, record holder of Notre Dame's mens steeplechase event, a top-notch marathoner, a 1:53 "half-miler", and soon will attain his PSU doctorate degree in accounting.  But I suspect I'm short-changing him by letting out a lot of other things he's equally good at or even better.

I've spoken with some of those on the team and recent graduates who all tell me how valuable his tenure has been.  I asked him to answer our soon-to-be-patented Ten Questions, and he has come through in remarkable style.  Detailed and honest, his replies cement my admiration of the Notre Dame and Penn State bonds in Track and Field and Cross Country.  Thanks Luke.

1. What similarities and differences do you see in the Track/XC Programs at Notre Dame and PSU?

Well, I was coached by Joe Piane who is much more of a Harry Groves type of old-school coach, and I think that's the biggest difference/similarity. Artie (Gilkes)  and I talk about that generation of coaches and how they just don't build them like that anymore. Coach Alford-Sullivan and Coach Gondak are great people and great coaches, but it's hard for the new generation of coaches to get away with inappropriate jokes, completely crazy monster workouts, cursing, refusal to send emails, whatever, like those old-school guys could. So I'd say ND cross country was pretty similar to PSU cross country back in the day, but it's different now (since Piane is still coaching, although he has mellowed a bit).

2. Are there prettier women at PSU or Notre Dame? (this is a trick question just to see if you are adept at dodging the tough ones!)

Penn State has like 44,000 students; Notre Dame has like 10,000. So there are more outliers in a larger student body, I'll just put it that way. Wow does that make me sound like a nerd. Which I am.

 3. Has Coach Groves ever given you a piece of advice or knowledge you have used to your advantage?

When I was running competitively, I'd frequently see Coach Groves at the indoor track. I'd be warming up for a workout and we'd chat after he finished his daily walk. I'd just be amazed at the stories he'd tell, and every time he'd ask me what my workout was, he'd have some legendary story about (Greg) Fredericks or someone just crushing a similar workout. Those were always inspiring because then I felt like I had to live up to the legacy. It's fun to follow in legendary footsteps of all the great runners who have come through Happy Valley.

 4. Does PSU or Notre Dame have better facilities?

Facilities are a toss-up. Both have nice cross country courses, excellent indoor tracks, and adequate outdoor tracks. Actually, when I was at ND, the same outdoor track had been there since 1988, so it was rock hard, patchy, and cracked. But now they have an adequate new outdoor track. I will say that Notre Dame had a better indoor track in terms of training. For distance runners, it's a lot better to train on a 320m track than on a 200m banked track. And being in the snow belt, a great indoor track is really really important. But Penn State has slightly better trail running from campus, so overall the facilities are pretty even.

 5. Does Notre Dame have anything similar to "The Switchbacks"?

Have you been to South Bend? It's pancake flat. Actually, about 2-3 times per cross country season, we'd drive to Wilson Park on the south side of Mishawaka, IN. Wilson Park was a snow tubing park and a disc golf course. So the hills were incredibly steep, and we did this one-mile loop that included 3 really nasty hills. Those were the hardest workouts of the year in my opinion. Plus you'd catch intermittent whiffs of marijuana smoke from the disc golfers. I don't know if that helped or hurt us. There were hills in town, but you had to seek them out. Here in Happy Valley, everything is hilly and you have to seek out flat ground. In terms of tough long runs like Switchbacks, at ND we had a 16-18 mile loop called Bertrand that literally ran from campus up into Michigan, did some rolling hills, and came home. Piane would egg us on, stopping every 3-5 miles to give us water, he'd leave the watch running, yelling "You're Sub-6 pace WITH the water stops!!!". Those would be absolute pound-fests. There was one particular day on Bertrand in 2001 when our team was really good and everyone was trying to prove themselves on that run. On that single run, about 4 guys who really wanted to make the travel squad got hurt. We could really have used a 5th man that year too (our top 4 went 5-6-36-58 overall at NCAA Championships, then our 5th was not in the top 150).

6. Academically, what differences do you see between your Universities?

Academics is the most pronounced difference between the two schools. From what I have seen, the top 10 to 20 percent of students at Penn State are truly excellent students whose work is top quality. At Notre Dame, that ratio is about 80 percent. This is not a slam on Penn State- remember, 15% of 44,000 is still 6600, while 80% of 10,000 is 8,000, so the number of excellent students is about the same at either institution. But in general, the students at ND work extremely hard on their academics. You have to, in order to be competitive with your classmates. Almost everyone studies hard every night except Friday and Saturday. At Penn State there's a lot more variety in study habits.

 7. If you cut yourself shaving, is the blood at least a tinge on the blue side?

Well since blue is an official color of both schools, yes!  (ed. I'm an idiot...)

8.  Is having a range of excellence from the 800 to the Marathon something you have always had?

I credit my high school coach, Scott Christensen, with developing my speed. As a freshman, I was a gangly kid with a great motor and excellent endurance. And although I had a good kick, my ability at 400m and 800m was fairly pitiful. Over the years, he gave me lots of speedwork and brought my 400m down to sub-50 and my 800m to 1:53.0. I credit my endurance development to the late Ryan Shay and Dennis Barker. Ryan was my teammate at ND and any time I ran with him, it was a pound fest. Suffering through those miles made me aerobically stronger. I didn't like it, but I knew it was what I needed to do to get stronger. Dennis was my coach at Team USA Mn. He prescribed a steady diet of "subthreshold" i.e. marathon pace running 1-2 times per week, depending on the training cycle. Again, I didn't enjoy it, but hard distance is an absolutely vital component of training for anyone racing a mile or above.

 9. Did the embrace from PSU Track and XC Alumni help you in your quest for your PhD?

PSU Track and XC alumni have been fantastic. Although I don't have a Penn State degree yet, and although I'll never have had the same experience of being on the team, the alumni have welcomed me to their community like I was one of their own all along. I've found it to be a great group of friends. For example, I ran into Todd Kletter at Notre Dame last weekend and we caught up like old friends. And of course Artie (Gilkes), Jayson (Jackson), the Shislers (Steve and Beth), etc have always been great to have right here in State College. And the younger alumni-- the guys and ladies I know from when I was volunteering with the team-- seem to visit all the time, so it's great keeping up with them. Since I spend so much time working on and thinking about research, it's nice to have Penn State friends outside of my academic department.

10. Will you be golfing with us this year in May?

Count me in for golf! My brother Quinn got me a new driver for my birthday last summer and sadly, it hasn't even seen green grass yet. Time to break that sucker in! (ed. Quinn is invited too! The only Scharsu on The Cup is Alan's brother Doug!)

Summing Up the Election Season

Here's a post I put on the blog awhile ago.  I think it should give both the winners and losers of the last campaign a little smile.  Now get back to work everyone, we need the taxes.  Those choosing not to work, keep the orange stains from the Cheetos off the couch!  And where is my Unicorn?  I was promised a Unicorn...

It's Voting Day!

Not that vote.

The vote for the NCAA Cross Country Regionals.  See if you can predict who makes "The Big Dance" from all the Regionals.  PSU is #4 in the Mid-Atlantic Region for the Men and #2 for the Women.

Visit the site at LetsRun.com and research the rankings and make your picks.

And remember, the Mid-Atlantic Regionals are on the Blue/White Course this weekend.

More Zombies and Physics, even TOGETHER!

"My" Zombie Movie has finished production and is soon coming to a DVD or Theater near you.  Plan 9 is a remake of the "worst movie ever made", Ed Wood's Plan 9 From Outer Space.  I will be listed in the credits as an Associate Producer.  I haven't seen it yet, but you can see the trailer here:

Plan 9 Teaser Trailer from Darkstone Entertainment on Vimeo.

That's Steve "PSU is 800 U" Black in the blue polo shirt running away from the zombies.  Steve also just filmed the role of Detective Gibson in the Cindy McKay episode of Discovery Investigation Channel's series "Pretty Bad Girls" coming in 2013.

Another Zombie Film just finished production.  This one was made in the bowels of CERN by students.  It seems the Higgs Boson causes Physicists a few more problems than anticipated!

Also Physicists explain what the problem is with Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo.*

Zoom in on the track to actually see the guys!

The satellite picked a great moment to take a view of State College and environs.  It happened to coincide with the arrival of the 10-member team to the PSU track after the 1,000 mile Odyssey to raise funds for the Life Back on Track Scholarship.

Kathy Mills Helps All 7 Little Lady Lions to 5K PRs

PSU Track Alumni honorary golfer Rebecca Donaghue coaches the Little Lady Lions of State College High.  (Dave Felice and Steve Shisler coach the Boys.) They won the District 6 Title recently with all 7 runners running their 5K PR.  Rebecca says a big part of her motivation was the photo of PSU American Record Holder Kathy Mills she posted on the wall of the locker room to inspire grit and determination, which Kathy had an ample supply of.  (Torturing the English language is a big part of my blogging schtick, but you get the point.)

The Little Lady Lions will be in action tomorrow at the State Championships in Hershey.

How a 4th Metatarsal Stress Fracture Can Change The World

This video contains the f-word dozens of times.
It also portrays one of history's worst monsters.
But it does reflect the passion of most runners I have come across at the office.  And it is funny, especially when the woman says, "but he can still aqua-jog."
