It's Hard To Get Practice Time At The Nursing Home

That seems to explain the no-height in the pole vault for 100 year-old Don Pellman, who then exclaimed, "I thought I was in better shape than that."

Don lives in an assisted living retirement home with his wife, noting that they don't have a track. Maybe our PSU Track Old Folks Home will be called Tranquil Ovals and come with a 360M track with measuring devices having 90cm = 1 M?

100 M - 26.99
Long Jump - 1.78M
High Jump - 0.90M
Shot Put - 6.56M
Discus - 14.86M
Pole Vault - No height

My Readers Are The Best: And I'll Never Doubt Our New Blog Laureate Again

The 1974 AAU XC Championship listing from Mike Fanelli's vast archives was a big hit.  The only way to top it would be photographs from that meet.  And Dan Martinez, our best Oregon Duck connection, has come through for us again!  Both Mike and Dan have always been invited to our Reunion and Golf Outing.  It would be a pleasure to have a Duck and a native Philadelphian amongst our ranks.  Please chime in with who is who among the runners pictured. (Hint: There seems to be 2 Nittany Lions lurking in the photos somewhere?)

And it turns out that Larry Mangan was 100% correct and both the previous Blog Laureate and I were 100% wrong.  Larry will now be tasked with his newest Group title as Blog Laureate, a position that has been unfilled for far too long.

The Coach Groves Spiked Shoe Meet was known as the Coaches Conference Meet in its early manifestation.  I'm not sure who did the legwork on this but I am impressed.  The telltale article was found in the Reading Eagle of all places.

  1. Larry Mangan   24:40   5.2 mile  (Course Record)
  2. Alan Scharsu     24:56
  3. John Zeigler
  4. Tom Rapp
  5. Jeff Adkins
  6. Ricky Garcia
  7. Jim Clelland
I cannot thank my readers enough for making this site almost factually accurate! hee hee hee All errors in fact are usually my responsibility.  But most times, my readers rescue me.

An Oldie And A Goodie At A Different Belmont

This is brought to us from the garage museum of our great friend Mike Fanelli.  One of these days Mike will come golf with us and bring his Nittany Lion wife with him!  If the Olympic History was preserved by Coach Lucas, Mike has pretty much taken up everything else.  There seems to be no end to his vast archives!

As Larry Mangan points out, there are 3 Nittany Lions in the top 27 here:
  •  Greg Fredericks, 4th
  • Charles Maguire, 17th
  • Paul Stemmer, 27th
The rest of the names are a Who's Who listing of the golden era of Cross Country.  Be sure to peruse the listing for a few smiles.

Belmont Plateau Is Still In The News!

The rejuvenation of Fairmount Park's Belmont Plateau Cross Country Trails has generated lots of buzz in the running community. We previously discussed this in 2 other posts.

Here's still another treatise on the changes.

Philadelphia story: the regeneration of FairmountPark’s running trails

I will get a first-hand look at the site in 2 weeks at the Jack Saint Clair Memorial Championship.

Big Day For High School Cross Country

Saturday has 2 really big meets on the slate in the High School ranks, not too far apart.

Hershey will be hosting races in 3 divisions (Blue, Red and Gold) on the PIAA and District 3 course on the old golf course near the Giant Center, Chocolate World and Amusement Park.  Teams from all over vie for a view of the course before Championship season arrives.

And Carlisle hosts one of the biggest and best run high school races in all the nation on the high school course right in town.  Teams from as far west as Ohio, as far east as New Jersey, as far north as Connecticut and as far south as Virginia will be there.  Again, many division including Freshman races and JV races!

I'll be in Wilkes Barre for another PSUAC meet.  Weather is supposed to be absolutely great for all three races!

It Ain't Over Til It's Over

And it's not really over then, BTW!   RIP Yogi Berra, you've been an inspiration to millions and a true American hero.  (WWII machine-gunner assistant on Omaha Beach followed by 10 World Series rings!)

Alumni Singlets On The Ultra-Trail

Another friend I have met through my work on the blog has been Ron Moore.  Everyone knows my admiration for Ron, even though we have never met!  Here are a few reasons for my admiration.

  • Ron was a State Champion in high school.
  • Ron was a top runner for Coach Groves while at PSU.
  • Ron toils in the top levels of Physics even while juggling a family and ultra-marathon training.
  • Recent 8th place finish at the Barkley Fall Classic 50K 50+K.
  • Ron proudly wears his Alumni Singlet while competing in places with names such as "Rat Jaw" , "Testicle Spectacle" and "Frozen Head". (I run on a treadmill called Bob)
  • Ron could give me 20 IQ points and still be ahead of me.
  • Ron will be running his first 100-Mile race soon!  (Donate to his cause HERE)
Ron at Testicle Spectacle.

Penn State Track Alumni Golfer Makes The National Team!

One of the great perks of being the Group's Herder of Cats is that I get to meet people I would have missed otherwise. And learn of the vast interests and talents that our member's have.

One that stands out is the long-term love of Field Hockey and John McGraw himself.  John was just announced as a member of the USA World Cup Masters Team.  John is currently living in Hershey and training in Lancaster.  Anyone who has ever played the sport knows how difficult it is.  I once played against my high school girls team, with disastrous results. It isn't anyway as easy as they make it look.  Ryan Foster is another who has played the sport in the sport's World Champion Country of Australia.

John McGraw, front and center.

Cross Country Apps For Your Phone And Tablet

These are all Android Apps.  For those who travel with The Dark Side, you are on your own! (Most everything is available for the iPhone too.)

By far the most interesting for me is CourseWalk - The Eventer's App  This is actually an app for the equestrian version of cross country.  This allows riders to view a course ahead of time and match landmarks and mile marks.  You can actually take a virtual tour of the course!  This kind of program could be adapted to the human form of cross country and make a lot of people happy.  I would have loved this a very long time ago at William and Mary when we warmed-up by running the entire 6.2 mile course before the race, and then ran the race.  Maybe my warm-up was faster than my race?  When we then started on the course again for the warm-down, I was finished.  6.2 + 6.2 + 6.2 = (actually high level mathematics like that was impossible at the time with my dizziness and confusion.)  When you realize that the course is on the grounds of an infamous mental institution, you really don't want to be left behind...

There are a couple of fundamental score keepers available for free, and some others that can cost a few dollars apiece.  The really good ones are for use by coaches on tablets and can run upwards of $20.

And for the really adventurous, here's an app for Cross Country Running Strength conditioning, whatever that is!?

The Definitive Old School Vs. New School Post

I've had my minions working on this for awhile. (Actually you know there hasn't been a post for 2 1/2 days, so it has been me trying to compile this all by my lonesome in between patients and my other work duties!)

An old post was picked up by other award-winning blogs when I first reposted it recently, so here I am reposting it for a third time!   Am I running out of things to say? Is the blog nearing an end?   (No.)

Anyway, here is the definitive post compiling all New School/Old School submissions in all the various iterations no matter where the source.

Old School (1970s): Practice right after school.
New School (2012): Practice at 5:30PM, just 1 1/2 hours after they get home from school.

Old School: Practice lasts 1 1/2 hours, team meeting included. Ends on time.
New School: Practice lasts 2 1/2 hours, followed by a team meeting. Never on time.

Old School: Practice at high school, trip home by school bus.
New School:  Practice at numerous variable sites, transportation necessary both to and from.

Old School: Dual Meets twice weekly.
New School: Quad or Quintuple Meets once weekly.

Old School: Tattoos only on a spectating ex-Marine Uncle from out of town.
New School: Neck tattoos on Freshman runners.

Old School: No sunglasses.
New School: Sunglasses on an overcast day as essential running equipment.

Old School: Nike Waffles.
New School: "Barefoot" Shoes.

Old School:  Winner at about 16:00 for boys 18:00 for girls.
New School: Winner at about 16:00 for boys 18:00 for girls.

Old School:  No idea what friends are up to during practice.
New School: Tweets and Facebook updates during practice to know that friends are "chillin".

Old School: Coach is basketball coach and high school math teacher.
New School: Coach is 6-time All-American and stay-at-home-dad.

Old School: 0 assistant coaches.
New School: 6 assistant coaches.

Old School: 1 Newspaper article a year, with many facts wrong.
New School:  Blog with daily updates on minutiae of every runner's life.

Old School: Quarter mile or half mile repeats a staple.
New School: Don't know what a quarter is.

Old School: One runner with a VW van on its last legs takes a few people home.
New School: Each runner over 16 drives their own BMW, Lexus or Mercedes home.

Old School:  Cotton
New School: Lycra

Old School: Stretch
New School: Core

Old School: Fartlek
New School: Lactate-Threshold or Tempo

Old School: 10-year old school-owned-and-loaned spikes which were painted each year to freshen them up.
New School: A personal aresenal.

New School: Screen-printed singlet logo.
Old School: Embroidered ones. Woo-Hoo! The old-timers win one!

Old School: Coach would pile whole team (boys only back then) into Plymouth Fury (Big boat car) and drive 10 miles out of town and drop off team, following team all way back to school. No one would bat an eye.
New School: Coach mentions a 5 mile run and whole team rolls eyes, AD forbids team from going off campus (school board lawyer says liability), and coach drives a Mini Cooper anyway. No one has any endurance.

Old School: Kids did things without critique of "how it used to be"
New School: Adults blog about how kids aren't tough anymore.

Old School:  In most of my years at UC I would go around in a van and give people mile splits, just to get a sense of pace.

New School:  Toward the end they would correct me as to where the mile split actually was based on their GPS.  I began to wonder why I was even out there.  The same was true for bus trips where I formally enjoyed talking with team members on the bus.  Toward the end they were all texting and there was essentially nobody to talk with.  Once again I began to wonder why I was even on the bus. Old School:  Running comes first , so drop a class so as not to miss practice.
New School: School comes first, so skip practice so as not to miss class. Courtesy of Phil Scott

Old School: Start a run down any country road or trail and run for 60-90 minutes, guesstimating the distance and pace.
New School: GPS tells you exactly where you are, how far and how fast your pace.
Courtesy of Susan Abuasba
Old School:  Cross Country was Blue Collar kids of factory workers, living in the city.
New School: Cross Country is Upper Class kids of college grads, living in the suburbs.
Old School: Cross Country team was mainly basketball players getting in shape before their season, lucky if there were 8 or 9 kids on the team. Many ran in Converse All-Stars high tops.
New School: Cross Country team has 5-10 serious runners and 30-50 kids trying to boost their resumes for getting accepted to college.  George Brose

I'm Terrified Of The 400 M

I have always been terrified of having to run a 400M race.  In high school it was my coach's threat to get me to run 4 races instead of having to run anchor on the 4 x 440Y.  I have only ever run one timed 400M and that was early in my Junior year when Coach Groves announced the event at the beginning of an interval session.  We even lined up in lanes with John "JB" Barber and Coach Groves and others actually timing everyone individually.

I held my own with a just slightly too fast start and smooth middle 200M.  The last 100M was grueling but I held my own and came to the finish in the middle of the pack tied with John "Ziggy" Zeigler in 54 seconds.  I think with years of practice and dedication to the event, I could have topped out at 53.9!

But THIS 400M will not be my next attempt at the distance. Thanks to KKOB for the link.

What was Your Best 400M, you distance-running smartypants?

Can You Name The Only Penn Stater In Nike's Ad?

This ought to Pi$$ a lot of people off in my dozens of readers out there, but then again, they at least included one Nittany Lion who had to live in a van during his tenure in Happy Valley. (This is for one of our most loyal readers, Dan!)

There Was An Empty Starting Corrall At The Spiked Shoe Meet

Be careful out there everyone!

Especially when running in large groups on highly traveled roads.  It seems the Bucknell Mens team just missed a bad blow to their season on the eve of the race. Only one spent time in the hospital overnight and all will return to action next week. They decided to withdraw both the Mens and Womens teams from the race.

Diamonds (are a) Girls, Best Friend(s)

Joe Kovacs added to his haul of awards this year with the Diamond League Championship in the Shot Put Competition.  "Hey Joe, where are you going with that trophy in your hand..."

The Womens Team won the Coach Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational in State College against some higher ranked competition.   They were paced by race winner, Tori Gerlach.

The Mens Team performed well, placing third behind Syracuse and Michigan. Ean DiSilvio placed 7th to lead the Lions.

The PSU Alumni Team placed 5th in the team competition with Brian Fuller leading the way in 22nd place.  Others on the team were Joey Walls, Mark Fuller, Kevin Fuller, Chris Cipro and co-blogger Matt GrovesCasimir Loxsom acted as coach, trainer and captain for the squad.  Thanks for representing the rest of us sloths!

Cas Loxsom, Kevin Fuller, Mark Fuller, Brian Fuller, Chris Cipro, Matt Groves and Joey Walls.
I missed the meet as I was in Pittsburgh for my daughter's PSUAC race in McKeesport.  It turns out 2 of her best friends and high school teammates were also there.  ( running for University of Pitt Johnstown, Mt. Aloysius College and Penn State Mont Alto.)

Still In The Burgh

I had a tour of downtown Pittsburgh last night before a wonderful street show and a great Italian dinner. Today is the PSUAC branch campus XC race at the Greater Allegheny campus in McKeesport.  There is also a high school race at Schenley Park,  just like the one 38 years ago before our meet against Pitt and West Virginia. It was raining hard, just like today,  as I  watched future Nittany Lion Alan Scharsu lead  the mud covered harriers.

Here's my blurry pic of Flagstaff Hill at Schenley Park.  But my pic of the "Dirty O"  didn't turn out.

PSUAC in the Burgh

Instead of being in Happy Valley for the Coach Harry Groves Spiked Shoe XC Meet,  I am in Pittsburgh for my Daughter the Elder's PSU Campus meet in McKeesport. On the way to "The Burgh" I passed the signs for 2-time HS mile champion and PSU All-American Bob "Snid"  Snyder 's home town of McConnellville.   "THAT' S BURG,  YOU DUMMY."

An Update On The Fairmount Park Belmont Plateau XC Course

Seems nostalgia for the days of yore have motivated enough people that more things are starting to happen in Philadelphia.  In addition to Parachute Hill and Flagpole Hill, Sure Kill Hill may be returning!

Holiday Ramblings Amid a Day Off

Don't forget to help spread the word of PSU Track and Field Alumni (Golf) to all your Social Media friends who won't listen to me!  Prizes await.

It's Labor Day, a day set aside for the Working Man to NOT have to work.  A day envisioned by Union activists and finally made into Federal law. With my bona fide membership in a division of the AFL-CIO Union, even I take the day off.  Add my 2 Hybrid cars and 3 electric lawn mowers, and you would swear I was a certain Leftist.  You'll have to ask Gary, Nick and Larry about that...

Don't bother to stretch before you run.  And don't warm-up too much, either. But anyone paying attention to me over the years already knew that.

"A marathon is a 20-Mile Run with a 3-Mile warm-up and a 3 Mile warm-down."
-Anonymous, before the 1979 NVTC Marathon.

Does the average runner care about USATF?  No, of course not. But it does give me an excuse for another photo of Cas Loxsom with Nick Symmonds!

The Prisoner's Dilemma adapted to Students.  People are remarkably predictable.

Uh-Oh!  Are cracks forming in the Hoover Dam of Physics?  Will Large Hadron Collider experiments dismantle the Standard Model?

Help Spread The Word And Win!

Now that the Cross Country season has finally begun, and this Blog has taken a vow not to mention the Sport played with an oblong and pointed ball any more this year, you are going to need something else to do.

My recommendation is to help spread the word of our Track and Field (and XC!) Alumni Group.  Eventually this leads to an increase in the Coach Groves Scholarship Endowment!  As an incentive, I'm offering a chance to win a fabulous prize to be drawn at next year's Reunion Awards Dinner.  I figure my circle of friends is (really!) limited, so let's expand the circle to all of your more numerous friends.  Like a pyramid scheme or something.  Without the buy-in and the inevitable realization that you've been had!

So here's the deal:

  • You get one entry for each time you Share a post on Social Media or email it to wider audience (be sure to include me in the email).  One per post.
  • I'll keep track of the numbers via a spreadsheet specially formulated by an Excel expert not affiliated with LetsRun.com.
  • We will draw a winner from the accumulated mess at the next Reunion, and...
  • Someone will win a free entry to a future Reunion and Golf Tourney and $100 in cash.
In order to help keep me from having to take food away from my hungry children to make up for the $250 I have invested in the contest....  Merely clicking on the ads garners us a few cents.  Actually going deeper into the site garners increasing amounts of mullah.  Actually buying something may bring us gold coins or something.

*All proceeds from the ads are destined for the benefit of the group.

But I was at Shippensburg for the Galen Piper Challenge,
also a 4K/6K affair.And I wasn't alone! Brian Fuller
and Kevin Fuller were there with their
Significant Others, members of the Shippensburg Alumni
team. Word is out that Penn State Alumni will be toeing
the line at the Penn State Open.

Teammates Are Forever

I have had a couple of submissions about some teammates of mine, from teammates of mine, that I wish to pass along.

First up, roommate Doug "Do Right" Kent dug up his copy of the 1980 Penn Relays Program including this photo of the 1979 Marathon winner.  I know Tim Backenstose frequently checks in.  He'll be pleased to see this again.  As was I!

And Larry Mangan sent this announcement along from a Houston friend of Marc Dunmire.  Marc was a teammate of both of us and a long time PSU Football seat-mate of Larry's.  Let's help Marc get his memorial paving stone!

Dear Friends and Family of Marc Dunmire,

Marc had and
always will have a special place in each of our lives.

A day doesn't go by
without thinking of Marc. Many times I find myself picking
up the phone to tell him about an upcoming sporting event,
to play golf or just to tell him about a
comic situation that only Marc's humor would understand.

Marc influenced our
lives in so many ways. I wanted to create some way to
memorialize his memory for all of us. Marc spent a lot
of time at running at Memorial Park. The
running center is a brand new facility at Memorial Park
which offers pavers for individuals names. These pavers
are for purchase in two sizes,
12" x 24" of 24" x 24".

If you are interested in participating in a paver for
Marc please email or call me for more information or
questions. Also please forward this to friends, co-workers,
or others not included in this email. The cost of the 12"x24"
paver is $2500, the "24 x 24" is %5000.
