Stolen From The 90s Guys

The alums from the 90s started their own internetty thingie years ago to keep in touch.  They still use it today to "socially distance" and yet still stay close.

Many of them are also members of our group.  I hope they don't mind spreading the latest from their world onto the stage of our blog!

Here's video from what they consider "long ago", (1994) featuring Bob Hamer and Che Arosemena.  That really makes me feel old...

Thanks to Mark Wimmer and Harry Stants.

Even More 800U Goodness "Old Age"* Is No Barrier

Harry Stants helped set the World Record in the 45-50yo 4 x 800M last week in Beantown.  Congrats, Harry.  From Mark Wimmer and Ron Moore:

Have to give a shout out to Harry Stants who was part of a World Record setting 4x800 relay at the  Boston University Last Chance Meet in Boston.  Harry and 3 other BAA teammates set a world record for the 4x800 Indoor relay for 45-50 year olds. The old record was 9:51.95 which they crushed by going sub 9.  Harry can give splits and world record time.  Time doesn't matter though as a world record is a world record.  Congrats to Harry and his teammates!

Reply from Harry:

Thanks guys and MarkWimmer for the shout out. It really would not have been if my B.A.A. teammate Chris MaGill (Iona '95) hadn't combed the records to find this weak record and twisted our arms to go after it. I had some hamstring issues going into it, but all was fine for the race. We ran 8:57.09  (previous record was 9:51) and our splits were (Davenport 2:16.9, Georgules 2:11.8, Stants 2:16.6, MaGill 2:11.6). It was funny we were the last event of the B.U. Last Chance meet, so people were filing out of the building as we're starting. There were 2 other college teams in the race that shellacked us and a third track club that was only 12 seconds in front of us. We also recruited a team of younger guys to pace us, which helped a lot. The record isn't official yet, we're working with USATF to make it official, should be soon.

We Always Said It, But The 90s Guys Codified It

It has been a joke since the very first students attending the land-grant farmer's high school that became our alma mater.  With the electric chair housed at nearby Rockview Prison, the moniker became even more funnier after Penn State became a University.

State Penn!

But the 1993 XC squad took the name to a new level when they warmed up at the NCAA XC Championships with the t-shirts made up by Leif Steiner.  Even Coach Groves got in on the action during the meet.  I believe these photos were by Brian Boyer and the bike in the last pic is Matt Hutzelmann's

Tom McGlynn, Bob Hamer, Coach Groves, Harry Stants, Ken Cooper.
Coach is holding Jake Bartholomy's All-American Certifate for finishing 29th. The team finished in 14th place overall.  Not bad for a bunch of convicts!

29th Jake Bartbolomy 30:32
58th Robert Hamer 31:00
95th Leif Steiner 31:33
109th Jon Pritchard 31:43

Official Physicist Chimes In! (To Point Out Another Error On My Part!)

Brian Boyer, still our only Group's Official Physicist because Ron Moore apparently can't golf (hee hee hee), chimed in with news of additional Alums on the turf in San Francisco for the Club National Cross Country Meet.  Both Harry Stants and Tom McGlynn placed highly in the Masters Mens 10K with some really good times.

Alumni Singlet Makes Appearance at "Reach the Beach"

The team of mostly PSU Track Alumni (Golfers) that came in second at the New Hampshire Reach the Beach 200 Mile Relay were really a remarkable group.  The only team ahead of them were many years their junior.

Soon-to-be Official Group Physicist Ron Moore graciously sent us some pics but was nursing a hamstring injury and acted as a driver of one of the two vans needed for the expedition.  Reading up on this event, I'm stunned at the logistics and attention to detail that's required.  It's a testament to the education provided by PSU that all of this was handled with such professionalism..The rest of the rabble of our group tip our hats to each and every one of you involved in this event.

Here's Mark Wimmer finishing his final leg with the Alumni Singlet leading the way.
Captain Wimmer with his Alumni Singlet!

The start in the mountains of New Hampshire.

The celebration on the beach.
