As the final qualifier for the NCAA Indoor Championship 800M Final, Handal Roban ran a very nice race, finishing in 4th place. With the disqualification of the lead runner because of his severe swerve into second lane, impeding the surging Texas runner, he ends up in 3rd place! 1:47.28 at altitude.
We had a very good turn-out considering the world we currently find ourselves in. There were 40 or so attendees for both the Reception and Dinner. There were 6 foursomes on the golf course. And there were many attendees for Vivian Riddick's Zoom Presentation and the Coach Schwartz Celebration for the Women's Team. Coach Groves finally got his 2009 wish of more women attendees for our celebration of Penn State T&F/XC.
The Mountain View Country Club hosted the tourney and were excellent in their support of our efforts.
I sorta/kinda won for the 3rd time in a row. Because Steve Brown's sons golfed with him, we had a team of "ringers" without a hacker like me. According to the rules set up by Clark Haley decades ago, this team is forbidden. All teams must be rigidly, strictly chosen randomly on Friday night, except when sufficiently bribing of the Officers of the Group has been undertaken! The Browns managed 5-under par, with my foursome scaring them with a 4-under par back 9 after an even front nine. (Please realize I am being mostly funny with this, but I won't know for sure until I see the engraving on The Cup next year.) I hit few shots with my wonky wrist, but I suppose 4 of my shots actually counted. For all you non-golfers out there, you would do much better than this without ever having golfed before. Come golf with us next year. It was a pleasure golfing with Harry Smith, his son Ian Smith and Coach John Gondak this year.
There was a paucity of potential in the running for the "numb-nuts" award, with the absence of Kevin Kelly O'Brien. Just joking Kelly, you were missed.
The Triathlon at the track, which has replaced the Alumni Run, was won by Steve Balkey, with individual events won by one of the Fullers (I never know which one; it's definitely a problem of mine!) and Greg Fredericks, Master of the Hula Hoop.
Speaking of the Fullers... They all golfed together this year. It was honestly only by chance, I swear to God. Bob Gabel became an honorary Fuller to fill up their foursome.
Paul Mundy won the Longest Drive contest, which he does nearly every year Beth Shisler does not golf .
The dinner menu was excellent (flank steak, grilled chicken with Parmesan sauce, and a chocolate cake that brought a smile to Paul Mundy). The selection of four different flavors of chicken wings on Friday night was also quite splendid. Free draft beer and a full cash bar got the crowd in just the right spirits to meet new friends and regale old friends with white lies about the days of yore.
There are stories of great times had by many (after my bed-time) at The Phyrst on Friday night and Pickles on Saturday night. I managed to host Rock and Roll LegendPaul Souzato nearly 11:00PM on both nights before tag-teaming and handing off to Night-Life loving Clark Haley. I think we have a convert to our efforts in Paul, with maybe even a Rock and Roll Reception in our future!
Ken Brinker became only the third recipient of The Rusty Boot, the highest honor that can be bestowed on any PSU Track Alum.
Two hardy members of the group drove their Harleys fairly long distances to join us. Both Mike Shine and Paul Mundy looking good BTW!
Coach Gondak won the closest to the pin contest on a hole which is normally his nemesis at his home course. A six-foot putt led to one of our birdies to close in on the Leading Brown group.
Kay Warfel made multiple homemade gifts for raffle and Coach Gondak supplied numerous items to add to the mix from the team's supplies.
A tour of the new locker room was given by Ryan Foster. It's good to have him back.
The Ghost Award went to Paul Souza who finally joined us and says he will be back every year from now on. Speaking of future years, we have decided to alternate between May and August in the future, just to see if we can entice a few more reluctant attendees. More on that to come.
Quite a few attendees climbed Mt. Nittany again this year, in addition to touring the Sports Museum and Berkey Creamery. Remember, the golf is optional but highly recommended!
State College has taken Covid hard by what I have seen. The entire block containing The Saloon, Hi-Way Pizza, The Deli and the Lions Den has been closed and empty. Baby's is closed and for sale. I would love to have enough mullah to buy it and bring back Pedro's! Anyone wishing to join me in investing in this opportunity, let me know.
My Nittany Lion Hawaiian Shirt was a big hit. The Lion's Pride came through for me again this year. Several others went on Saturday to find the stock already depleted. Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man happy, healthy and Hawaiian Shirted.
The Longest Putt on Hole 18 went to Ian Smith of my foursome with a 9' 1" effort.
I can’t wait to talk to the alumni as they’ve been so supportive of us over the years.”
Isaiah Harris.
The retro Singlet is always appreciated!
Another B1G Win!

There has been a long line of excellent Penn State "2-lappers" who have paved the road that we affectionately call 800U. And never mind that there are hundreds of others that weren't 800M runners among our group that have also helped cement that moniker even into the national Press.
The 800M is my favorite race to watch and I really enjoyed running it in high school. I just didn't have the talent to pull it off on a bigger stage. But I consider myself fairly knowledgable on the event. Watching Penn State half-milers over the last 20 years has been really fun.
Some notable PSU 800M runners I have had the pleasure to watch in the last 18 years
Brannon Kidder
Casimir Loxsom
Domenic Perretta
Matt Lincoln
Owen Dawson
Robby Creese
Ryan Foster
Sam Borchers
Add these guys to the other generations of middle distance specialists in the preceding generations all the way back to Alan Helffrich (1922-1923 800M NCAA Champion!) and you have 800U!
But all we were missing was another NCAA Champion in modern times. And it hasn't been easy. In the last several years there have been overwhelming dominant winners from domestic and afar. Were we again to be satisfied with an incredible performance only to be celebrating another second place NCAA finish? (Brannon Kidder 2015, Casimir Loxsom 2013, Isaiah Harris 2017)
Very few had Isaiah Harris being able to slay the returning winner and NCAA record-holder Michael Saruni. Very few except Isaiah and his coach, John Gondak. They had a plan, and they had a program. Us lucky Alumni who visited them a few weeks ago got to see that up close and personal. And many of us started to believe.
The race was run to precision by Isaiah. He demonstrated his intellect and wisdom at every stage. The fast opening lap of 51.x or so (rough guess) putting him in 5th place right near Saruni. It wasn't anything he hasn't done many times before. He didn't panic, and held steady until the middle of the backstretch of the second lap. Anticipating the surge of Saruni, Isaiah gently eased into the lead monentarily before Saruni rushed past, gaining a two-stride lead at the finish of the last turn. He didn't panic, as Isaiah said he "saw blood" at that point, and knew that Saruni had used too much getting to where he was.
The last 100 meters was what all of us Alumni (Golfers) have been waiting for for "a few" years now. As Isaiah slipped by the defending champion, you could sense that the drought was finally over!
Isaiah eased a tad at the finish, possibly giving up another School Record, but nobody, including him, seems to care. Penn State was on the top of the podium!
Just last week I complimented Isaiah by noting that he has excelled in the classroom also, making all of us proud. He also demonstrated his humility in post race interviews by including the Alumni in his thoughts. I think he realizes how much we support the program's success in every aspect. Any future 800 specialists out there have a role model and a college destination being represented with the highest recommendation posssible.

Coach John Gondak again was named the Big Ten Womens Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year. It gives me great pleasure is seeing him honored, as he has been with our group from his very first days as an assistant coach. He is also a very good golfer!
One special note of award grabbed my attention and gives me faith in the goodness of Man and the goodness of the Penn State Track family.
I have especially noted the achievements of Xavier Smith during this Track season and he has been named my choice as Performer of the Meet several times. But seeing him named as both a First Team Big Ten member and Sportsman of the Year by the Big Ten makes me especially proud to be a Nittany Lion! Not only is he an excellent competitor and now School Record Holder, but he also has demonstrated and been honored for good academic standards and good citizenship outside the world of track and field. Congrats Xavier, I am a big fan. Always continue to elevate the standards to which all the rest of us Lions aspire.
So I fled the real world yesterday for the wonders of Happy Valley. I left behind all the negativity of bills, taxes and home maintenance requirements. And I was rewarded like I never expected to be!
It was a glorious day in Happy Valley, with sunshine and temperatures reaching to 68 degrees! In the middle of February! And did I mention that I'm talking about State College?
Here are some of the highlights of my day:
Having Daughter the Younger drive the whole way to State College. Got to see Daughter the Elder and our dog Pooky!
Got to the track just in time to watch the final laps of the solo DMR effort of the Women to qualify for the NCAA. Danae Rivers brought them home in 11:01 (and change) which is now the school record and the #2 time in the NCAA this year! That makes 5 for 5 meets with a school record for Danae!
Saw Isaiah Harris leisurely run the first few laps in the Mile and then turn on the jets for a PR 4:05 (and change).
Had the opportunity to say hello to Coach Gondak and Owen Dawson.
Had the pleasure to speak with the Skerpons and watch their daughter Elyse run a fine 600M to qualify for the Big Ten meet. The Skerpons haven't changed a bit in the years since their 1983 wedding. I have. I dare you to find me in the pic!
Got word from the internets that PSU Track Alumni (Golfers) fared quite well in 800M shenanigans across the globe!
From jolly ole' England, as relayed from Ken Brinker!
Men’s 800: Cas Loxsom Gets a Big Win and a World Leader
One
week ago, Loxsom looked out of place running the 1000m at the Millrose
Games. But he closed quickly in that race to move up for second over the
final 200, and he shined today in an event he’s far more comfortable
in, the 800.
Loxsom got out well and stuck right on rabbitBram Som,
who took him through 400 in 50.28. By the time Som dropped out at 500,
Loxsom had opened up a big gap on the field and at the bell (1:17.50),
he had a lead of approximately 15 meters.
The rest of the field, led by 2015 world bronze medallistAmel Tuka,
was closing hard as Loxsom was starting to tie up. But he dug deep and
managed to hold on, and was rewarded for his aggressive running with a
world leader of 1:46.13. Tuka wound up second in 1:46.59, a Bosnian
national record, while AmericanErik Sowinskifinished fourth in 1:46.85.
While in Arkansas, there was a minor earthquake as Billy Cvecko slipped on his Alumni Singlet!

That's the leading time in the world this year and Cas's PR! And it isn't a bad effort by Billy, who is the hardest working man in track and field!
Lunch was Kung Pao Chicken, which was smuggled into the Ashenfelter Complex because the entire security world was focused on the Bryce Jordan Center and the Dance Marathon!
Dinner ended up being 3 lobster tails and bananas foster cheesecake. Technically the lactose intolerance episode didn't occur until after midnight, so yesterday was still all golden!
Not a bad day in February in State College, am I right?
I depend on others for a lot of my "reportage". And when big things are occurring for PSU Track and Field waaaay over in Oregon, I need help to bring you pictures and news.
So it is with great delight that I present our newest Roaming Corespondent, Patty Murnane Nosack! She happens to live very near Hayward Field, home of all track and field for the next millennium or so. (Remember, our original Roaming Corespondent is on the Appalachian Trail somewhere in the Green Mountains!)
Patty had the wonderful chance to take her daughter to Eugene yesterday and hang out in the Nike section of Hayward Field with other Nittany Lions. She generously sent me some exclusive pics for all of us to enjoy. Thanks Patty!
Grace, Patty Murnane Nosack, Tina Leatherman Jones and Kathy Mills Parker.
Patty met Coach Gondak by chance when she was heading home!
"We must be in the front row!"
Mark Parker gives Grace advice on shoe design!
Tessa Barrett before the 5000M. (Heal up quickly!)
The whole gang.
If I had the chance to visit Eugene, I would briefly visit Hayward Field, but I would really want to make it to the Dexter Lake Club. Here is Otis Day, still singing the Lake Club's favorite song in 2012! He had to learn to sing after the movie. He lip-synced the original!
The meal by PSU catering at the Indoor Complex was one of the best I have ever had at an event like ours. The BBQ 1/2 chickens and ribs were complimented by several sauces, the raspberry chipotle being my favorite. The mac and cheese was the absolute best I have ever had. Even the salads were esquisite to this "occasional" salad eater! The open bar kept many in the best of moods. Desserts were "to die for".
I couldn't fly the drone Airship 800U outside on Saturday because of the rain, but it did get some Thursday and Friday flights at the track with great results. And I flew it indoors at the Ashenfelter Complex before the Alumni "Run" and only crashed it while landing!
Coach Groves came to all the events with his private chauffeur and had a wonderful time.
The rain didn't daunt the golfers among us. Thirty-one of the thirty-two who signed up braved the conditions for the duration. There was even sleet at the finish, just to welcome all of us home to State College.
We all are trying to make next year's event over-the-top great! We will attempt to arrange the whole thing during the PSU hosting of the Big Ten Outdoor Track Championships next year. That may even free up some of you who can't come normally because of High School District Meets. Stay tuned...
Some of you had some nice things to say to me about the blog and all of our efforts to unite all 1,500 or so PSU Track and Field Alumni. I thank all of you for helping to spread the word. It is starting to have a real effect!
Tim Backenstose went out of his way to present to me a framed pic of me in the Penn Relays Marathon in 1979 (He won the whole thing!). He needed the help of a professional photo enhancement specialist in Hollywood to pull it off. It means more to me than he can ever know. It will be on display in my treadmill room along with my Rec Hall lockers and Letter certificate signed by both Coach Groves and Joe Paterno. Thank you Tim!!!
Coach Groves received the very first presentation of the "Rusty Boot", an award symbolizing everything that's good about PSU Track and Field and Cross Country. This was made by bronzing one of Coach Bill Whittaker's javelin spikes from 1970, a quite gnarly sight.
Coach Gondak received an Alumni Singlet through the efforts of our Faucon 'de OrangeMark Hawkins. This was only the second such special singlet given out with the word Coach in the lower bar. We all thanked him for having the Penn Relays 4 x 800M winning team wear the throwback singlets for the Championship of America race.
With the constant rain all day Saturday, we forgot to place the markers for the specialty holes on the course, so we don't have Closest to the Pin, Longest Putt, Longest Drive winners this year. But I'm pretty sure all of those winners were in my threesome. Nick K. won the closest to the pin, Clark Haley won the Longest Drive and I won the Longest Putt. And I have the Golden Putter to prove it!
Those usually in charge of the Coach Groves Golf Tourney Championship Cup forgot it at the track after the event and it was retrieved by our Chief Laundry Officer and given to Tim Backenstose for safe keeping. Thus, Tim is now our Keeper of the Cup, a title of honor in our group. Tim also won the "Rob Whiteside" Brotherhood Award for actually golfing with us despite hating golf more than I do! Rob Whiteside was unable to attend the event, as he just had passed into New Jersey during his through-hike of the Appalachian Trail. This was the only certified excuse for missing the event. Others take warning.
Turns out that The Cup was left behind on purpose by The Keeper of the CupHarry Smith so that Owen Dawson would place it in a display for all to see year round at the Track Facility! There is no Idiot quite like a Track Alumni Idiot Officer, me included!
All photos stolen from Hanna Humphries and Jim McClelland!
The title "Coach" is one that deserves much more respect in our current world. But not from me. I already hold Coach Groves in as high a position as anyone except my parents and grandparents when the guidance of my life is concerned.
Coach Groves being interviewed by yours truly.
No one had as much impact on my personal journey through life other than my family members. He often taught me positive values and rarely taught me what negative values can mean. Both are very valuable lessons which don't come about easily if no one is there to guide you. As a lowly walk-on, Coach took as much time with me as others who were recruited. He met with me individually many times and instilled both praise (occasionally) and criticism (often) of what I was doing. This rarely had anything at all to do with my running.
Two years ago he summed it up by saying, "Athletics (track and field) is for education and recreation, nothing else. Winning is important only in that you learn more."This was from an 82 year-old coach emeritus who had dedicated his entire working life to track and field coaching. Powerful stuff really. And histradition is beingcontinued at Penn State right now by another coach.
Coach John Gondak.
I first met Coach John Gondak in the meeting room of the Hampton Inn at our Friday night Reunion prior to one of the earlier Coach Groves weekends. He had just been hired as the distance assistant coach by Coach Sullivan. He actually took the time to meet with us haggard rabble and even golfed with us. (He is a very good golfer BTW!) Our admiration began then.
In the intervening years, his blood has gradually turned blue and now he is a full-fledged Nittany Lion. I quietly lobbied for him when the head coaching job opened up, and I couldn't be happier to see what he is doing for the program. Integrity, excellence and yes, education, are at the core of his tutelage.May it continue for many more years.I'm going to call him "Coach" from now on, even if he blushes as I do it!
A Rare Totally Curmudgeonly-Free Post by your favorite Curmudgeon!
There are great things happening in the Penn State Track and Field World. And every one of you can help in any number of ways. So get off your butt and seize the day!
I spent yesterday in State College. The State College I have come to know and love. At one point at a pivotal moment in my world, the temperature dropped 10 degrees in minutes, snow, rain and sleet began and grayness enveloped the Valley. And I wasn't even crabby!
How can that be? What could possibly make ME ignore something to complain about so easily? Well, Number 1 on the list is this man...
Yeah, you younger people recognize Billy Francis immediately. I was taken aback while taking pics at the Penn State Open when I recognized a PSU Alumni Singlet in the distance. (and I swear there's another new sale coming!) I couldn't figure out who it was until he got close. Billy was in San Diego just 1 day before, enjoying 95 degree temps and possibly "chillin" (or whatever you young hipsters do nowadays!) But there he was, fighting for position amidst the runners 3 or 4 years younger than him! (hee hee hee, Billy)
I greeted him and received a big hug in reply. And I've been happy ever since. I'm not making that up. I've only ever met two people like Billy, one of them being Billy. (The other was John "DNA" Kauffman for what its worth.) These two people have the rarest of touches in this crazy world. The glass is always half full, and might as well be overflowing for these two. I learned in my numerous Genetics classes (all A's BTW!) that you are either born happy, or not. Billy wasn't just born happy, he was born to BE happy and make those around him happy. God bless you Billy. I'm a big fan. And everyone should friend him on the various social media. It will be worth it. It's also why he has been named our Group's Undersecretary of Fun.
Other Reasons For Not Being Crabby:
Got to see Coach Gondak and Roger "Gunny" Roll at the meet. Both in good shape and working hard. Gunny was able to send my greetings to Coach Groves. (And don't the rest of you ever fail to thank Gunny for what he has done for our Country, our Team and Coach Groves whenever you see him!)
Gunny and Coach Gondak.
Got to meet Craig Houtz who has been taking photos for PSU Athletics since 1977! He has just digitized most of his collections. Maybe we will be able to tap into some great pics of days of yore!
Got to see Daughter The Elder place 2nd in the PSUAC Conference in the Penn State Open in the snow, sleet and rain! Next up, the USCAA Nationals in Florida, with Jim Ryun in attendance!
Got to see Coach Teri Jordan at the meet. Talked about her son Dan Jordan's new job in Florida and reminded her not to miss the next reunion!
Coach John Gondak is en route to Brisbane, Australia for another recruiting trip! Knowing Hobart's sub-4 miler Ryan Foster (who has never had a Foster's beer!) makes me excited for the results of the trip.
Here's some useful advice for Coach during his travels...
Coach John Gondak, who I have been fortunate enough to call a friend since his arrival at PSU, was just named theMid-Atlantic Coach of the Year for Mens Indoor Track. In his first season, John has brought some needed energy into the program, and not just in his natural coaching position of Middle
Distance tutelage. I spoke with some athletes at the recent Sykes and Sabock Challenge, and across all disciplines of the sport, he was praised by everyone. There are some exciting times ahead for all of us invested in PSU Track and Field.
And let's not forget about Darrell Hill'sField Athlete of the Year also. We've kept up with his progress quite well on this blog. For some reason, I really enjoy his Shot Put event despite it being the farthest from my limited wheel house. Can I call what I did a wheel house?
Entries to the Indoor NCAA Nationals (this year in Fayetteville, Arkansas) are always limited to the top 16 times or distances or performances. PSU has quite a few entries, however. The 3rd ranked Shot Put of Darrel Hill, the 2nd place Distance Medley team and the 3rd ranked Mile of Brannon Kidder lead the pack.
Darrel Hill, Shot Put -3rd seed 67' 3.50" School Record
Robby Creese, 3000M -8th seed 7:50.36 School Record
Brannon Kidder, Mile -3rd seed 3:57.13 School Record(3 readers pointed out that Robby Creese's 3:57.11 is the school record. Thanks to all! You guys are the best.
Brian Leap, Triple Jump -13th sed 52' 6.75"
Mens Distance Medley Relay - Brannon Kidder, Robert Rhodes, Za'Von Watkins and Robby Creese 9:28.36 2nd seed
And it just doesn't seem like Outdoor Track Season yet. My high school Freshman daughter has only had 2 practices so far, one of them indoors and the other one on the road doing hills. Here are my Nike snow boots I originally purchased in the early 90's. I had to dig them out for some shoveling this week. I hate them a lot. But I love the throwback Nike Internationalists in the background!
Track Alumni Golfer Owen Dawson paces the One Mile with a splendid 1200M (sorta 1200!) while wearing his Alumni Singlet. Always a highlight in my book!
After Owen's excellent 1200M (sorta 1200!), future PSU Track and Field Alumni Golfer Robby Creese took over and won the mile with this year's #1 NCAA unconverted Mile of 3:57.86.
Ex-Freshman Roommates Tom Rapp and Larry Mangan reunite at the Ashenfelter Complex. Tom's wife Mary Rawe was also an All-American and 1977 Freshman classmate of all of us.
Alumni Golfer, past foursome teammate and William and Mary head coach Steve Walsh actually got me to pose for a very rare pic of myself. I promised him I would post it on the blog with it all, despite my overall desire for anonymity. During the entire day, I noticed that I was the shortest person in every room I was in.
Coach John Gondak arranged the whole affair to bring as many Alumni together as possible and to honor past coaches. Coach Teri Jordan thanked the crowd of over 100 with a brief speech.
Coach Groves gave an even briefer speech, but was mobbed all night by everyone there. Just as it should be.
In the background just to the right of Coach is Ken Brinker, Alumni Golfer extraordinaire! It was announced that Ken recently donated $100,000 to the PSU Track Program. Our Chief Morale and Laundry OfficerLarry Mangan is currently organizing the effort to match Ken's magnanimity. More of that is to come.
Penn State's Indoor 3000M Record Holder Sam Masters and Fiance came up with the best excuse for missing this year's Golf Tourney. They are getting married that day in Missouri. Officially, that will be the only excuse us Idiot Officers will now allow!
Greg Fredericks received his Alumni T-Shirt from Le faucon d'orangeMark Hawkins. He was gifted the item by us Idiot Officers for the extraordinary efforts he has made for Coach Groves in the past year.
Greg models the Special Edition Alumni T-Shirt made for Roger "Gunny" Roll for his above-and-beyond efforts for Coach Groves in the past year.
Addendum:
Artist's conception
On the late-night drive home, I ran over a skunk near Seven Mountains and was later almost hit head-on by a high-speed car driving the wrong way on Route 83 north of York. I really wish I could have stayed over night in State College. Two trips through the car wash has not dissipated the smell and I still have a tremor thinking about the almost crash.
