More Alumni Action Post World Championships

There are alums in action even following the World Championships. 

Joe Kovacs will continue his season in Europe, joined by Darrell Hill.  They placed first and third at the recent American Track League meet.

 

Brannon Kidder (4th) and Isaiah Harris (8th) also mixed it up at the same meet in the 800M.  The Womens 800M had Danae Rivers placing 8th.

And Doreen McCoubrie was the 5000M USATF (60-64yo) National Champion at the Masters Nationals in Kentucky.

The Men Had To Get A Word In On 800U This Weekend

 First, Brannon Kidder didn't run in the USATF Championships.  So he found himself running the Mile at the Boston University Last Chance Meet.  There were fireworks aplenty in the race as Josh Kerr set the British Indoor Record and 2 Oregon chaps ran under 3:55.  That places Evan Dorenkamp near the cut-off to make the Mile at the NCAA Championships!  Fingers crossed.

Brannon ran 3:54.91.  Is that the Alumni Record?  The Interns are useless.

800U Reuniting!

 

With the news that Isaiah Harris has moved on from Nike to join the Brooks Beasts, a significant portion of 800U's record setters are reunited as well.  Brannon Kidder has been with them since early on and former World-Best Indoor 600m champion Cas Loxsom had been with them earlier.  Isaiah and Brannon were 4th and 5th at the last Olympic Trials.

Championship Season Is Here

Kevin Kelly O'Brien has a lot of time on his hands following his complete body transplant. (I suppose it only feels like that, Kelly?)  So he did the work of all 5 Basement Interns and came up with the complete list of PSU qualifiers for the upcoming USATF Olympic Trials in the refurbished Hayward Field. 

That is, of course, subject to change.  Please chime in with any updates or changes!

First, Morgan Shigo (6) in the Hammer. Then, 2 in the 800M, Isaiah Harris (5) and Brannon Kidder (7). Third, 2 more in the Javelin, Mark Porter (7) and returning Champion Michael Shuey (1).  Finally, two more in the Shot Put, Diamond League Champion Darrell Hill (4)and World Champion Joe Kovacs (2).

And last week, the USATF Road Mile Championships were held, with Colin Abert finishing in 6th place with 4:00.7.

Joe Kovacs Won More Than Our Performance Of The Year!

It was a very strong year for PSU Alumni.  We had incredible performances that ended up not receiving any votes in our poll.  I find it hard to believe that Brannon Kidder's appearance in the 2019 World Championship 800M Semi-Finals failed to garner even a single vote!  Even Michael Shuey didn't get a single vote for his 4th place finish at the Pan Am Javelin toss.

To be honest, both of those performances were overshadowed by other performances from the same Lions.  Brannon posted a vote for his 3:35.27 1500M and Michael came in a strong 4th place for his National Championship in the USATF Javelin.

There was a tie for 2nd place between Danae River's NCAA Championship in the Indoor 800M and Doug Walter's donation of part of his liver to his nephew.  (Wow, tough crowd!)
But again on the top of the podium was Joe Kovacs, this time for his incredible last throw victory by 1cm with a Shot Put toss over 75 feet in distance by two other competitors.

Track and Field News called this the best ever Shot Put competition and has named it as their Performance of the Year also.  I'm sure Joe will value our honor as more special!

I'm Ready For More Abuse: Rankings Of The All-Time Indoor Alumni Records

As the third job I have in this current busy climate, this blog has a very good reputation for inaccuracy, mistakes and overall "I have to look that up".  I take abuse on just about everything I post, but posts involving statistics bring it from every corner of the world. So as an introduction to these marks, please update me on any inaccuraccies, mistakes or "I have to look that up".

Here are the tops marks for Penn State Mens Track Alumni Records from all-time as per the IAAF Scoring Tables.  These were compiled by Matt Grove from Coach Groves' notes and amended by all of us over time.  Undoubtedly, there are mistakes.  But that gives us all an opportunityy to get together in a collegial fashion and have a little fun along the way.   Hee hee hee

PSU Is 800U: World Championships

Brannon Kidder came oh so close to making the Finals in the 800 in Doha.  His time of  1:45.62 was tenth best in the semi-finals.

He will end up 11th in the overall standings as fellow American and rising star Bryce Hoppel advanced to the 8 man final with a 3rd place finish in his heat with a 1:45.95.

Brannon ends the loooooong season as only one of 4 men to have had qualifying times in both the 800M and 1500M events for the World Championships.  Way to go Brannon!

It's Mid-Season For XC, And There Still Is Track!!!

The early cross country season is over.  The tune-up meets and time trials are long gone.  We move on to the meat of the season getting ready for the championship season.

Ranking of All-Time Best Outdoor Performances of Penn State Track Alumni*

* Performances after PSU eligibility has expired.

The IAAF, or whatever they call themselves now, has a ranking system that can be used to gauge performances across Track and Field times and distances.  This system is very useful, but is only one way to interpret Athletic performances across all the disciplines.

While these tables can never be a definitive measurement of the level of performance
considering the differing opinions among sports statisticians concerning their basis and
method of construction, they do allow us to consistently measure and compare athletes and their performances across the rich variety of event disciplines.

So, I combined our previous compilation of the Event Record Holders in each discipline with the IAAF Scoring Tables.  The results are sometimes surprising.

800U: Are PSU Alumni (Golfers) Gearing Up For Next Year's Championship Season?

After more than 6 months of injury time, Isaiah Harris is just starting to wind into shape for this season.  He ran a 1:46.61 in Philadelphia last week.

And Brannon Kidder outdid that with his Brooks Beast teammates with a 1:45.39 in Seattle.

That puts them in about 27th and 81st place in the world rankings...

A New Alumni Record!

Brannon Kidder placed third in the Brooks PR 1500M with a time of 3:35.27.  That eclipses the old Alumni Record of  3:38.4 held by Larry Mangan from 1982.  Brannon's time converts to a splendid 3:52.5 Mile, which would also outpace the Alumni Record of Larry's from 1984, 3:56.9!

Alumni Performances Of Note

The NCAA track season may be over, but the professionals soldier on.  And the two greatest strengths of the recent  Program history are still at it.   PSU is 800U and PSU is Shot Put U...

In Rome, Joe Kovacs and Darrell Hill heaved the metal ball over 21 meters each.  Darrell placed 2nd at the Diamond League Event in 21.71 (71 feet 2.72 inches), while Joe was 4th with 21.46 (70 feet 4.88 inches).

And on the Left Coast at the Portland Track Classic, Brannon Kidder bettered the USATF 800M standard with a 3rd place 1:46.51 time.
