Homecoming Means Coming "Home" And A Visit With Coach Groves

A Home meet during Homecoming week means a Friday meet.  That means many of us can't swing it. But many certainly did!  Yesterday's Penn State National attracted many Track alums.

The meet went well, especially for the Women, who topped all teams, multiple ranked teams.
In her fourth race donning the Blue & White, Julia Paternain crossed the finish line in 20:30, which marks her third win of the season, two of which have come at the Blue-White Golf Course. Just 11 seconds after Paternain finished the race, sophomore Alison Willingmyre (Wernersville, Pa.) completed the 6k course in 20:41 to finish fifth overall.
Along with Paternain and Willingmyre, Danae Rivers (Derby, Conn.) and Kathryn Munks (Chester, N.Y.) both tallied top-15 finishes. For Rivers, she ran 20:48 to place seventh and Munks took 15th in 21:01. Moria O'Shea (Greensburg, Pa.) rounded out the scoring for the Blue & White as she ran 21:16 to finish 35th.

In the men's 5.2-mile run, the Nittany Lions ran to a 10th-place finish as a team with a score of 252 points. Individually, Colin Abert (Easton, Pa.) paced the Nittany Lion harriers as he placed 10th with a time of 25:17.
In addition to Abert, Alex Tomasko (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) finished 43rd with a time of 25:47 and John McGowan (Northport, N.Y.) took 53rd in 25:54. Underclassmen Isaac Davis (Cogan Station, Pa) and Owen Wing (State College, Pa.) rounded out the scoring as they finished 71st (26:08) and 87th (26:14), respectively.

Something Old(er), Something New(er), Both Are Borrowed, Both Wear Blue

I really appreciate submissions from my HUNDREDS of readers!  And I just got 2 that seem to mesh together in a good way.  Thanks to our good friends Coach Bill Preston and Bob Hudson.

First up is an article promoting the upcoming Reunion of Track and Field greats from the New York metro area in the 60s, 70s and 80s.

Fred Singleton handing off to Mike Sands at the 1974 Penn Relays.

Before college, Sands was a sprinting ace for Brooklyn’s Sheepshead Bay High School. He ran for the Bahamas in the 1972 and 1976 Olympics. Today, he runs the Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations.

And a brand new article in the Penn Stater highlights Megan McCloskey!

And don't forget to sign up for the Reunion and Golf Tourney!  Either with PayPal/credit card or via snail mail to Harry Smith.

A Decent Weekend

I traveled to suburban Philly on Friday for a 12 Hour stint in the JTP.  Twelve hours in Jenkintown and 3 trips to the best convenience store experience in the nation, WaWa!

I was there to visit another Penn State Branch Campus, Penn State Abington.  Which happens to be undergoing a Renaissance in Cross Country under head coach Jim McClernand.  Jim happens to be a friend of Hugh Hamill since their 3rd grade year in the Suburban Philly environs.  They ran for the powerhouse Father Judge teams in a time before they invented color photos!  hee hee hee

Coach Jim McClernand with Daughter the Younger.

PSU Abington XC, 2nd at the Immaculata Invitational.
And in other Track Alumni News, Coach Ryan Foster backed up his victory in the Kilted Mile with a victory for the Edinboro Fighting Scots in the Womens PSAC Championships over Shippensburg.  The Mens team perfomed well, finishing second.

Ryan Foster, right and Kara Foster, 2nd from left.
And in that other weekend event, everyone needs to thank me for not watching at all, as that ensured the great performance.  I think it is now 11 times in a row that my watching or not watching correlated directly with the performance of the team.  I will be taking donations to ensure I don't watch the next one in Columbus.  Any takers?

More Coach Jackson Horner Goodness With Strong PSU Track Alumni Ties

I especially like Coach Horner's pants...  Takes me back to smiling memories.  I once fell off a pair of platform shoes when I tripped on my bell-bottoms.

This is a photo of the 1978 PIAA Cross Country Champions Note the PSU Track Alumni (Golfers) connections here.

Without help, I identify Coach Horner (1950's PSU captain), Nick K. (who still is running fast miles!), Dan Draper (where is he now?), Randy Moore (of 7:11.17 4 x 800 fame!), Brian Mount (our W & M connection and honorary Track Alumni Golfer), Bob Hudson (still with ginger locks!) and last but not least, Hugh Hamill (my foursome partner at last year's tourney!)

Others include John Dixon, John Coyle and Steve Phillips.

Great Coaches Are A Gift From God: The Coaching Staff In Heaven Just Got Better

In order to honor Coach Jackson Horner's passing, I knew my meager writing abilities would be insufficient.  I asked one of his very own stars to pen some thoughts for our blog.  My gratitude is only surpassed by my humility.  Thanks Bob Hudson!

From the "pen" of Bob Hudson...

Many of us on this blog have had the pleasure (well sometimes it was a pleasure) of being coached by a legend – Harry Groves. Whether we threw the Javelin, Put the Shot, jumped or ran we benefited from our time with Harry.

Some of us on this Blog also had the pleasure of having been coached by a 2nd coaching legend – Jackson Horner of State College High School. Jackson passed away this week and. As spent a little thinking about it, I was wondering why he had such a great impact on me.  When I was in high school we certainly butted heads on more than one occasion.  It occurred to me that he was not a coach, but really a teacher whose subject from 3-6 PM – and seemingly every weekend was track and field… and life

What is a coach – or at least a great coach?

A coach is like a parent. At the time you both hate them and love them. With the passage of time you realize that they, like a parent, only want the best for you. Instead of making you eat your vegetables, they make you do that extra lift or that additional interval.

A coach teaches you that the team matters – more than you matter. If you don’t show up for practice you are letting your teammates down. Coach Horner NEVER missed one day of school in 38 years.  If you don’t do the interval in the assigned time then the WHOLE team does it again! It was not the star who mattered, but the 4th and 5th men who made the difference in cross country.

A coach makes you do the impossible.  A kid who could not finish a 3 mile warm up becomes a state-runner up.  A team that goes almost 20 years without losing a dual meet, because he creates a culture in which the upper classmen demand excellence from newcomers.

A coach is like a CEO – he knows when to encourage and when to kick butt... sometimes simultaneously.

My coach had a storied career:

He ran, and I believe he was captain of, the Penn State Cross country team.  If I recall Horace Ashenfelter was a teammate.

He coached a team that 50 years ago broke the national record in the 2 mile relay – only to have that last only a few hours thanks to Jim Ryan out in Kansas

He had a streak of dual meets wins in cross country that lasted 20 years – until broken by a Chambersburg team led by future Penn State Doug Walters.

He was listed in Faces in the Crowd by Sports Illustrated

He was in the National High School coaching hall of fame.

His accomplishments were many, but more than that, I think back on the life lessons he and Coach Groves taught us: Show up for practice, don’t give up, work hard and good things will happen!

It was ironic, because moments before hearing the news from a high school and Penn State friend of mine I was in a coffee shop. The manager was going crazy because an employee – a young kid – had not shown up for work and not even bothered to call in.

So what’s the moral of this too long story? The next time you are enjoying your cup of coffee thank the coach who taught your barista that showing up is over half the battle.  Thanks Jackson we will miss you!

Fast Times From State College High

See what I did there? har har. Disclaimer: I will be tooting my own horn in this post.

The connections between State College Area High School (800 High) and Penn State (800 U) are staggering. Start with our own Steve Shisler coaching the current of record breaking high schoolers.

I am proud to say my alma mater has a new school record in the 4x800 meter relay (I was on the old record setting team). Their time of 7:57.49, run this past weekend at the Kevin Dare High School Invitational, broke our 8:01.50 from the Indoor State Meet my senior year. The time we beat was 8:02.4* and had two future Penn Staters in Nick K. and Bob Hudson. By the way my high school also produced Randy Moore and Chris Mills. 800 High indeed. Oh and by the way again, future 800 U representative William Cather broke his own school record in the open 800 with a 1:54.05. He will be attending Penn State next year and will continue the tradition of State College distance talent to run for Penn State.

*Was probably run on a flat 160 yard hybrid basketball court/track instead the banked 200 meter mondo surface we have now.

I'm an Idiot Most of the Time

With Matt Fischer's 3rd place finish at the Big Ten XC Championsips, it was again pointed out how much of an idiot I can be.

Rusty Boots.

The finest ever performance by a PSU Mens team member at the championships was presaged by an article published by the PSU Program several weeks ago.  Tyler Ferguson's article pointed out that Matt was continuing the "Rusty Boots" tradition that dates back to the earliest days of Coach Groves' tenure (and even before!).

I must point out that the article was in the queue for linkage on the blog until other things came up and I let it slip.  Thus pointing out my idiocy again.  Thanks to Bob Hudson for reminding me of the article. Thanks for looking out for me.  I'll take Bob's advice to change the name of the blog to "Rusty Boots" under advisement.  Maybe I'll make it an sub-headline???

And remember, there are a few "Rusty Boots" items available in the Group Store!

Fifth Place is Still in the Top Half! (And Don't Forget to Order a Singlet!)

5)     Bob Hudson, Nick K., Mike McCahill, Beth Shisler (+3)

This crew represents 4 of the original members of our humble group.  Mike McCahill has been  to every one of our tourneys except last year.  One of these year's he'll get his name on The Cup I am sure!

Bob Hudson traveled back home from Buffalo NY with a golf game which is much improved.

Nick K. stayed near home in State College for his 8th appearance in the tourney (I think).  My daughters are still talking about our visit with Nick when he lived in Manhattan.  I need to start those Group Outreaches again!

Beth Shisler must have missed the fairway on Hole 3 or she would again have won the longest drive contest.  Her foundational womens alumni singlet must be easing the pain of letting Gary steal the award from her.

Speaking of Alumni Singlets, orders are now being taken.  Click on the link on the right sidebar to order your very own.  Help spread the word of the world's best Track Alumni Group. The women's version is blue with white lettering, the men's are the classic white with blue lettering.  Your graduation year (or any other year you want!) appears on the right shoulder.  There is also a retro "S" on the back collar.

Blasts From the Past!

A weird series of events led me to cruise through the Interwebbie Thingie where I came across this gem of an article from the Centre Daily Times archives.

At the Second Annual Arts Festival Ten-Miler, PSU Track Alumni Golfers were out in force. This would be 1977 or 1978, well before the dawn of breathable fabrics, colors and probably when dirt came to be made. Even Coach Groves tickled the pavement at exactly 6:00 pace.

Greg Fredericks, our Course Marshall (among other duties!) defended his title in impressive fashion, blazing a 47:37. Charlie Maquire came in second in 50:19. I wish Charlie was still around to enhance our group. He was one of the three toughest runners I ever saw. (I witnessed him run a sub 9:00 2-mile 8 years after college on minimal training.)

Other PSU Track Alumni Golfers included in the trailing pack:
  • Jim "Frit" Cooper (on our Wish List) 51:37
  • Tim Backenstose 53:49
  • Gary Black 55:10
  • Hugh Hamill 55:32 (Also on our Wish List)
  • Mark Parker 56:06 (Nike COO and on our Wish List)
  • Bill Kvashay 58:30 (you heard about his Penn Relays Marathon "Win" here)
  • Kathy Mills (Namesake of our newest award for the Most Valuable Woman Golfer and former World Record Holder in the 5000M)
  • Coach Harry Groves 60:00 (I wonder who took off the extra seconds on that one!)
  • Bob Hudson 60:57 (as an 8th grader!)

"Harry's (not Jerry's) Kids" - "WHO AM I"

Something new for you all to enjoy and try to piece together:
"WHO AM I"

- I have a B.S. in Finance...
- I, like many other athletes, nearly opted out of being a part of the
team until Coach Groves, threw me up against a tree and insisted
I was making the mistake of my life if I were to do so...
- I, like many other track athletes at Penn State, attended the university
in one of the many years Brian Boyer attended...
- I was / am (aren't you always) a member of the United States Air Force...
- I bleed deep blue blood as my father did before me...
- Some of my best years were spent in Center Halls...
- I had an awful fear of heights and often times panicked when I was forced
to cross bridges...
- I held the indoor mile record in the old indoor complex...
- I was a runner-up in the PIAA mile in PA...
- I was a member of the 4 X 1500 team that set the American Collegiate Record...
- I have a wife named Maureen, a son named Daniel, and a brand new daughter
named Anna Grace...
- I hail originally from State College...
- I now live in Buffalo...
- I wonder what ever happened to the likes of Dave Coney and Greg Reiner...
- I carried the nickname of "OPEY".....

Pretty easy? Maybe not for some of the younger guys or grandpa's......

I AM ROBERT H. HUDSON - Class of 1986
