PSU Is 800U: Early Spring 1983 Edition

From State College Emmaus* native Paul McGlauglin comes this great photo of an 800M workout early in the Spring of 1983.  It shows most of the group that went on to win the Championship of America 4x800M at the Penn Relays later in April, Coach Groves' first ever.

That's Paul McGlauglin leading the troops, with Mike Cook, Ken Wynn and Tom Walchuck right behind.

How many of us remember those early season workouts buffeted by the winds that the 2-foot high pine trees couldn't quite block on the backstretch?

Addendum:  The 2017 edition of early season 800U News: Dom Perretta won his first outdoor 800M in Arizona at the Big Ten/Pac 12 Challenge!   Way to go Dom!

Some Sad News With A Snippet of Zen

Steve Bongivengo, keyboard player with Paul Souza and the Velveteen Playboys passed away this past weekend.  Steve was a fellow Penn State graduate and I got to meet him at the last Arts Festival where the Playboys were the headline band.  My condolences to all involved.

And here's Steve on the right in his PSU days Live at The Scorpion!  Check out Paul with hair and another PSU Track Alumni Golfer in this great photo from yesteryear.  Take your guess in the comments below!!!

Here's a little bit of Outdoors Goodness from Tom Walchuck way out there in Alberta.  That's in Canada.  Sort of like America's Attic.  We don't get there often, but there sure is some cool stuff up there when we finally climb the stairs to have a look.  They also have the finest coffee and donuts in the world. But you need a Passport now!

A Canadian Outdoorsman Shows Us How It's Done

Western Canadian and Honorary PSU Track Alumni Golfer Tom Walchuck put this video on the internetty thingie recently and I thought it deserved more play.  It seems we have quite a few outdoorsmen in our ranks, including recently retired Coach Gary Schwartz and Colorado meteorologist, coach and professional runner Tyler McCandless.

In honor of his video snagging "this bull trout from his favorite grayling pool", I'm going to have a cup of Tim Horton's decaf K-cup from my new coffee maker and a donut (alas not a Tim Hortons).  I hope someone will tell me what a grayling is.  I'm not much the outdoor type....

Addendum:  Here's a photo of an Arctic Grayling Tom just sent me.  One weird looking fish...
