God Gave Us A Snow Day So We Can Fill Out Our Brackets

Yes, it is that time again.  Time to enter Ken Cooper's Bracket Challenge!  And this year's battle will also be the setting for the first ever Jack Russel Terrier Match-Up.  My very own Spott Moskowitz will be up against Director of Fun's Bo Quinn If there are any other Jack Russells out there, you are invited too.
Mercedes, Bo and Teddy Quinn.
Spott Moskowitz in his natural habitat.

Welcome to the 23rd Annual Penn State XC/T&F March Madness Pool.

Already the Cheeseheads are complaining about getting a lower seed than the U of Minnesota Gophers.  Suck it up and just play.

Congrats to Northwestern, who scored a ticket to the dance for the first time ever.  Can they make a run?

Everyone is in the Pool.  It is free and pride only.  Last year we had 149 people.  Feel free to include kids and pass along to other friends of Penn State.

Picks due by tip off of first Thursday game.

Old Time Steeplechase Goodness, Finally In English!

We have had the video of Horace Ashenfelter's steeplechase victory in the 1952 Olympics several times before, but it was never narrated in English.  Here's a new version picked up by our Director of Fun Teddy Quinn with commentary by Mr. Ashenfelter himself, in English!

Come join Teddy Quinn and me at the Reunion and Coach Groves Golf Tourney on May 15, 16.

USATF XC Club Nationals This Weekend

Our Director of Fun Teddy Quinn pointed me to the article highlighting the fact that this year's championships will have the largest field ever at the Lehigh course in Saucon Valley.  And right there at the top of the article is a nice pic of our very own Track Alumni Golfer Kyle Dawson, leading the pack!

I told Teddy that if it wasn't a Dawson it would be a Fuller!
Joining him at the event will be John Evans, who will be lacing them up representing our very own USATF team!  Thanks, John.   He relates that his expectations are muted, but I assured him that getting to the starting line means he has already won in my book.  Have a good run!

Also there will be Doreen (Startare) McCoubre, who happens to be the Grand Poobah of the entire Mid-Atlantic Division of the USATF, of which our team is part. Her help was integral to having a team representation in the USATF.  Thanks Doreen!

Director of Fun Still Bringing It

As we last brought you stuff from NYC's very own Teddy Quinn, he alerted us to some great photos of Bill Cox, a PSU runner in the 20's.  Bill was an Olympian even before traveling to the "middle of nowhere" in Central PA.  He was a member of the XC team in the 1924 Paris Games.

He also seems to have had a Sophomore Slump* (like me! Except mine lasted far, far longer...)

Teddy also has some great stuff from the "recent" 70's!

The 1973 Dream Mile was supposed to bring the first ever sub-4 mile to Rochester NY.  It pitted the follicle-challenged Dick Buerkle and the Olympic Gold Medalist Dave Wottle.  It also included Allegheny Community College star and future Nittany Lion, Paul Stemmer.

The result was a 4:00.6 mile with Buerkle edging out Wottle and a bicep-enhanced future Nittany Lion in 4th.

* I am betting that Bill met the future Mrs. Bill Cox just prior to this "slump".

Vintage PSU Track From Our Director of Fun

Teddy Quinn has taken time off from his life of fun, leisure and frolic in NYC and has sent in some great photos and stories about PSU Track Alums of old. The first one takes us back to the 20's!

Here's some photos of Bill Cox, PSU Class of 1929 running a fast mile in Teddy's home town of Rochester NY.  And that's him wearing a few of his medals from his stellar high school career where he had set the National record in the 2-Mile of 9:44.3 before matriculating in Happy Valley.

"PSU is 800 U" Meets the Super Bowl

From our intrepid Director of Fun in the glorious Big Apple comes word of a kinda, sorta connection between the Super Bowl and 800 U (otherwise known as Penn State Track and Field).

It turns out that San Francisco 49er Linebacker NaVorro Bowman was roommates with standout 2-lapper Mike Malizia when NaVorro ended up in Coach Paterno's dog house one time.  And Teddy Quinn figures if your roommate is in the dog house, you're in the dog house as well.  I agree.

I lived next door to PSU lineman Mike Munchak and Irv Pankey (Irv was a tight-end back then!).  I don't think either was in the dog house, but they probably could have been.  A visual etched into my retina is of a naked Irv Pankey sliding down a flooded, detergent filled hallway of the 2nd floor of Holmes Hall.  We all ended up paying for the flood damage to the first floor.  And I still can't get rid of that visual!!!

1,000 Mile Reflections

Our very own Director of Fun Teddy Quinn put some thoughts together after some time has passed from the 1,000 Mile Relay to benefit The Life Back on Track Scholarship, part of the Kevin Dare Foundation.

An excerpt:
Leaving a team and a support network like Penn State track and field was very hard for me. It’s a special group and it’s very hard to leave. But for this run, we were all back on a team. We had uniforms and sponsors and gear. We had organization and an itinerary. We had support, we had publicity and we arrived at Penn State to a hero’s welcome. These were very special days for all of us, and I will always remember these 95 hours of running, when 10 individuals, supported by 1,000’s more, came together and accomplished something so tremendous that it was worth all the pain our bodies could endure.  I’ve been reminded of the strength of the human spirit, the power of self-belief and the abilities that lie deep within all of us to overcome tremendous obstacles. And, for that, I am ever grateful to this run, this team and Kevin Dare.

Alumni Singlet Blazes 5th Avenue Mile

Brian Fuller finished in 24th place at the NYRR Road Mile Championships in 4:22.1 yesterday.  Teddy Quinn may still be recovering from the 1,000 Mile Relay, but still looks sharp in his "It's Always Cloudy in Rochester" t-shirt.  I'm having one printed that says "It's Always Boring in York, PA".

What It's All About

Here's our group's Director of Fun Teddy Quinn sharing the road with his father finishing up the Life Back on Track Relay on the roads of Pennsylvania.  Another nice touch guys!  You are wearing me out...

Addendum: They keep up the surprises!  The runners will detour to run by the Dare family home in State College.  My respect grows...

And there was also a surprise appearance from The Keeper of the Cup Harry Smith who rode his bike with the team for a stretch near Hudson Ohio.  Also well done, Harry!

Through it all, I'm sure Kevin Dare is beaming like never before and has gathered quite a crowd extolling the virtues of Dear Old State.  If you have not already supported the effort, you can do so now!

What Other Penn State Track Alumni Golfers Are Up To This Summer

Brian Fuller (and probably all 30 or so Fullers in our Group!) is preparing for the 1,000 Mile Relay to benefit the Kevin Dare Back On Track Scholarship.  Let's get behind all 10 of them.  And Teddy Quinn makes 11!

Blake Eaton continues training in Happy Valley despite the lack of a PSU Track Alumni Singlet!  Efforts are underway to get him one.  I should also let him know that we have hats available at our very own Store too.  But I'm afraid he'll pound me to a pulp if I tell him that anyone buying that hat he's wearing gets a free bowl of soup.

Jon Hendershot traveled to Chicago for some studio work on his new album.  What is it with these PSU high-jumpers and musical talent?  And that's Megan Anderson showing him around Chicago.

Teddy Quinn is Our Director of Fun

Or at least would be, if we could get him to golf with us!  He may be more apt to appear next year now that I have taken PSU Track Alumni Golf onto Twitter.  He was the first of many to advise me to make the leap onto another Social Network.  It only took this confirmed hermit 3 years to get there!  Now I have to figure out how to use it to the advantage of our group.  I may even try to attract Followers by promising exclusive content, otherwise not seen in the Track Alumni Golfers Universe. Don't forget to Follow me to see what I come up with.

Speaking of Directors of Fun, here's the Charleston RiverDog's Director of Fun bringing back memories of Rick Dempsey at the venerable Memorial Stadium in Baltimore.

And let's not forget some real Track and Field content.  Here's PSU's and Canada's very own Matt Lincoln rounding into shape with a fine 3:39.32 1500M.

World Record Attempt of 1,000 Mile Relay (Yea, You Read That Right!)

To honor Kevin Dare on the 10th anniversary of his tragic accident in August, ten Penn State Track Alums and friends will attempt to shatter the existing record for a 1,000 Mile Relay.  The 10 runners are a who's who of runners affiliated with Penn State, and I wouldn't bet against them!  Having once run a 24-Hr. Relay, I know that they are in for a wild ride.  This will take significantly longer, and the logistics of the course adds complexity to the equation.  I hope to speak with a few of the runners soon to learn more of the attempt. Teddy Quinn will act as their media consultant. Check out the Web Site for more.

The runners:
  1. Luke Watson - PSU grad student and honorary PSU Track Alum Golfer
  2. Brian Sell - 2008 Olympic Marathoner
  3. Dennis Pollow - veteran Grand Canyon Rim to Rim (twice!)
  4. Chris Cipro - Two-Year PSU Captain
  5. Vince McNally - 4-time NCAA Cross Country Qualifier
  6. Kyle Dawson - Three Year PSU Captain
  7. Ryan Foster - Our Group's Singlet Supplier! (More on that to come.)
  8. Brian Fuller - Continues his career despite also entering The Real World!
  9. Owen Dawson - 800 M All-American (PSU is 800 U)
  10. Tyler McCandless - 10K All-American

Director of Fun Teddy Quinn Mulls Changes in Plan

The 2011 reintroduction of the Downtown Tour for the physically hardy (or the metally deranged!) on Friday night of the Alumni Reunion weekend, chaperoned by Director of Fun, Teddy Quinn has been jeopardized by recent action of PLCB authorities.*

Citing many instances of misconduct and general mayhem, 6 bars in the downtown area have had objections made to the renewal of their liquor licenses by the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board.  Former tour stops like The Shandygaff, The Lions Den, The Gingerbread Man and The Phyrst have upcoming hearings concerning the matter.  New entities like the 797 Sports Bar and The Mezzanine have the most serious allegations against them.  In keeping with the family friendly theme of our reunion, alternatives are being formulated to potential closures of the old stand-bys.

First up is the new Chuck E. Cheese in downtown State College, long a favorite of students everywhere.  Pizza will be available for those  interested. Tokens not included.  Next up is the Church Social at the Methodist Church on College Avenue.  Fruit Punch and finger foods are readily available there. Don't spill any on the carpet. Also, continuing the religious portion of the tour will be a Mennonite Service on Atherton Street.  Remember to be totally silent during this portion of the tour!  Next will be a vegetable juice selection at that little place on College Avenue. And in order to spice things up after that, we contemplate a tour of the Nuclear Reactor on campus.  Watch closely as Homer Simpson naps.  Don't let him press the wrong button!  Tired participants can then crawl home to the Hampton Inn where Keeper of the Beer, Clark Haley will curse at you as he hands out cans of beverages from the tub in his room.  Don't wake his neighbors!

* While the objections to the renewal of licenses is real, the rest of this post is totally made up.  Teddy Quinn is hard at work formulating a fun evening for all!  Appropriate t-shirts are being dreamed up already.

Are Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen Fans of PSU Track?

My earlier posting of the "Neil Young/Bruce Springsteen" (really Jimmy Fallon and somebody else) version of Willow Smith's Whip Your Hair brought us a great response from PSU Track Alumni Golfer Teddy Quinn.

Turns out there is a sizable contingent of "young" PSU Track Alums who are big fans of "The Boss", (not sure about Neil Young?). (I giggle every time my 10 yo daughter says "I love that song!" whenever she recognizes an Eric Clapton tune from 1969 because of Guitar Hero.) Teddy somehow obtained tickets to the show (by hook or crook?) and can be seen in the video screen-grab just above Bruce and Stevie during the "real" musical part of the show.  That's him with the conveniently neon shirt.  Neon appears to be his best color.  It appears the far-reaching tentacles of PSU Track Alumni Golf are spreading, just as our global domination plans were written.  It is only time until our goals are realized, (insert insane deep-voiced laughter here).

For those interested, Teddy Quinn will be attending the Event this year, dragging young, vibrant (golfing) talent with him.  I may just make him the Group's Director of Fun, as fun seems to somehow follow him around (like a stalker at a late-night comedian/talk-show host's Connecticut home!)  Join Teddy and me for a tremendous weekend of Golf and merriment in May!

The Harry Groves Golf Tournament and Reunion Set to Grow Exponentially in Its Tenth Year: And is Coach Groves the Black Knight?

High level meetings were held this weekend following the Penn State National Cross-Country Meet between top officials of Penn State Track and Field Alumni Golf and representatives of The Nittany Lion Club and The Varsity "S" Club.  Actually, I talked to both group idol Ken Brinker and Mike Milliron of the Varsity "S" Club at the reception at Damon's following the race.  High level meetings sounded so much better!

One of the great benefits of having thrown myself into "the herding of cats" by blogging about all things PSU Track and XC, is the great people I have met along the way.  No other group I have ever been associated with has more intelligent members, more interesting members and more passionate members.  Ken and Mike both fit that description.  In our wide-ranging discussions it became evident that the Athletic Department is thrilled with what our little group has accomplished with our meager resources.  From our founding by Clark Haley and continuing with great leadership under Harry Smith and others, our group has always given 100% of our proceeds back to the program, and they have noticed.  The resources of the Varsity "S" Club and Nittany Lion Club will be utilized to reach out to all 1500 members of the PSU Track Alumni (second only to Football in numbers) through email and newsletters.  Members of both groups and the Athletic Department are poised to golf with us this year.  They asked whether we could handle 30 foursomes this year!  We can always dream.  Participation this year will bring automatic inclusion in both groups, as we already designate all our proceeds toward the endowments for Track and Field/Cross-Country scholarships.  There may come a time when the track and xc programs are completely self-funded (like the new Hockey Program!).  If monetary donations are not in the cards for you (I can certainly understand!), enthusiasm and participation is all that is asked of you.  We are a group that accepts all members, and everyone is treated to the same level of loving ridicule as Olympians, All-Americans, or plain shlubs like me.

And in keeping with the mirthful theme of our group, I must present some interesting observations about the recent Penn State National XC Meet.  I had been unaware of the changes to the course made in the last few years, and was taken aback by the inclusion of a narrow bridge along the course. (I'm all for it, by the way!)  And when evidence of grievous bodily injury to 2 Alumni Team members due to a mishap near the half-mile mark, I assumed a guardian at the bridge was restricting passage. Now, photographic evidence has emerged showing  Coach Groves somewhere along the route near the bridge prior to the start.  Could it be that Coach Groves is actually The Black Knight of Monty Python fame, and "None Shall Pass" (at least without a fight)*? I'm more intrigued by the fact that the two have never been photographed together.
Photos include the Alumni Team with Coach Sullivan, the infamous bridge and Coach Groves somewhere along the course...

*Coach Groves is certainly not The Black Knight and no disrespect was intended with the joking speculation.  Everyone knows that Coach is a White Knight in all matters.

"None Shall Pass" (Actually, Only a Couple Did)

One against the men and 2 against the women.  It was a good showing at the Penn State National Invitational Cross-Country Meet at PSU this weekend.  A large number of quality teams participated in the event with the Men coming in second and the Women coming in third.

The finish of the Mens race was quite exciting with Kyle Dawson and Vince McNally (both Juniors!)  accelerating from the trailing pack to place second and third respectively.  All the scoring runners are improving each race, with the MIDDLE DISTANCE runners astounding everyone with their distance prowess.  Syracuse took the Mens title, trailed by PSU and Villanova, all ranked teams.

The Womens race was equally exciting with PSU placing third to Villanova and Syracuse.  PSU had a great spread of only :24 seconds.  Sophomore Brooklynne Ridder paced the squad with her 20th place finish.

In my long absence from the college XC scene I was not aware that it has become a contact sport.  Somewhere after the half mile mark there is apparently a bridge with a Black Knight not allowing passage without a fight!  A large number of participants were felled by the Knight. Two on the Alumni Team were bloodied in the melee.  I'm not aware of anyone still missing, but it certainly looks awful compared to the genteel sport I was familiar with.  We only attained marks like this when working out in Rec Hall!

  "It's Only a Flesh Wound!"

Despite starting in the very last corral (near Park Forest). the Alumni team of Dennis Pollow, Brian Fuller, Teddy Quinn, Cody Edling, Kevin Fuller, and Tim Johnson beat the Pitt Panthers and 4 other teams with their 22nd place team finish. They all looked resplendent with their Letterman Jackets at the alumni reception at our usual Damon's Haunt afterward.  I had offered my services as a 7th man, but officials would not allow my walker on the course.  I bring you this unique perspective on a XC start instead:

And here is footage smuggled in from the half-mile mark by brave survivors.  Let's hope the woods are rid of the riff-raff by the time of the NCAA Regionals!

And here are photos of current Letterman Jackets along with my size 34",  "Old School" model!
