Coach Groves at his Ad-Libbing Best (Actually Safe for Work!)

The "pull quote" from this video is his observation that Greg Fredericks is the finest man he has ever met.  I feel the same way.  (And, of course, the follow-up quote that "I doubt that Greg says the same thing about me.") We are certainly lucky that we all know these two, (and so many more!).  It's time to sign up for the Reunion in May to add your name to the list of Penn State's Best.

For extra credit, name anybody you know in the crowd!

What's Your Excuse?

Kelley Gneiting, a 400 lb. ex-Sumo Champion finished the Los Angeles Marathon in 9:48, a significant improvement of his previous effort.  This attempt has the proper video and pre-event weigh-in to prove his world record for the largest man to finish a marathon!

He described the day as "pure hell".   Which, it seems to me, would be just about what I would expect.

I'll stick to my 3 miles daily, thank you very much.  "Pure heck" is much better than "pure hell", I'm pretty sure.

Is My Dog 94% as Smart As Our President?

* Artist's Conception of Spot's Demeanor.

Barack H. Obama still leads the PSU Track Alumni Basketball Pool, but Spot Moskowitz (named after a character in the Odd Couple Series) made a big move to close the gap.  He may be nearly as smart as our President in basketball knowledge.  I feel Spot has him beat in both Domestic and Foreign Relations though.  Don't be alarmed, he had Bush beat too.  I think he is at least as old as Coach Groves, so he probably had Eisenhour beat also!  Here's Ken Cooper's Sweet 16 Update!

Upsets and milestones.  On the eve the “Fab 5” ran on ESPN, Michigan almost gains revenue against Duke, but it was not to be.  Pitt becomes the first #1 seed to choke.  More to come?  Highlights as we nail the Sweet 16:

1.       Nice work to Penn State wrestling – National Champs.
2.       Impressive…. Barack Obama still leads the pool.  Insert your own political joke here.
3.       Bob Hamer in 2nd?  He hasn’t sniffed Top 10 since Pitino and Jamal Mashburn were getting stymied by Duke in the 90’s.
4.       Christie Riter – no faith in Madison?
5.       Dan Kunetz and JudyLynn Weaver – wow, 12 of Sweet 16 correct.  Very impressive!
6.       Florida State realized they not only cheated in football, but they also can play hoops.  Nice work to Crash, Ryan Caldwell and Tommy Bisko with that pick.
7.       Who needs Gordon Hayward as Butler uses a thrilling last 1.5 seconds to make it to the Sweet 16.  No one picked this, however there were 3 folks who did pick Old Dominion.  Everyone else had Pitt.  Oops.
8.       R.B. – nice work.
9.       Only 3 people forgot Dwayne Wade no longer plays for Marquette and put them into the Sweet 16 – Jim Carney, Katya Dimitrova and Hammer
10.   No one picked VCU into the Sweet 16, except Kletter, Dan Kunetz, Jay Novak and Dave Strandberg.  Very nice.
11.   Average of Sweet 16 about 1 point more in 2011 with 8.63 than last year at 7.78.

March Madness with a Canine Twist

Ken Cooper's NCAA Bracket Contest is off to a good start.  Spot Moskowitz, my adopted stray Jack Russell mutt,  is in the top 33% of bracketeers after the first round, despite having spent a recent week in the Hospital.  He has Kansas winning the Championship, having not listened to me about Ohio State's "advantages".

Here's Ken's update:

Yes, we go old school at Tournament Headquarters.  Even with VCU taking G-Town down last night, we use the term “First Round”.  Highlights from the first round:

1.       President Obama leads the pool.  Unbelievable.  Other celebrity entrants include Dick Vitale, Snoop Dogg and Sports Illustrated.
2.       This is the Penn State Track March Madness Pool and 26/94 took Temple.  What the Heck?
3.       Our condolensces to Ricardo Hall – had to make picks without his Terps in the Field.  Did they make the NIT, unlike the Golden Beavers of the University of Minnesota?
4.       Crash:  Nice work.
5.       Sorry Kansas.  There will be no Rock Chalk this year.  How do I know that?  Marshall Cannon took KU and he sinks faster than an anchor in the ocean after the first round.  Watch.
6.       Amazing consistency between the years – the average number of first round picks this year was 22.93.  Previous three years it was 22.34 (2010), 22.66 (2009) and 21.94 (2008)
7.       For the first time in recent memory, someone did not lose their champ in the first round.  Where is Ron Moore when you need him?
8.       Apple does not fall far from the tree – Tom Bikso takes Carolina as champ.  Tommy Bisko takes Carolina.  Matt Bisko takes Duke?  Guess who is the favorite child.
9.       The following had Morehead State as the upset:  Mark Anderson, Coop, Luis Lee, Maddi Raz and Steph Smyth
