Fourth Place was a tie with Florida and Oregon with 25 points.
And my heart skipped a beat when I got the news that the Marathon will be returning to Happy Valley this year for the first time since 1984.
You've managed to combine the best recent news about PSU T&F with the worst memory I have about my time as a Nittany Lion - the dreaded NVTC Marathon of '78 (or '79?- I've repressed it). First and last marathon ever. Wyatt and I had nervous tics for years afterwards. That was no way to treat 800/1500 guys. LTM
ReplyDeleteI at least hope you remember running the first 20 with me holding you back. It would have been much worse at the end if I hadn't "helped" you. My marathoning advice has always been "Start slow and taper off".
ReplyDeleteI have the results of the 78 marathon in a box in the attic. Looked for then in Feb. to celebrate the 35th anniversary. Couldn't find them.
ReplyDeleteIf that is a recent picture... it looks like your on the outside of the Dome.
ReplyDeleteYou're lucky ;-D
I had to run like heck at the finish to beat Liz Berry (Larsen) and Coach Groves. 3 weeks after pneumonia, so I was pretty happy with a 2:41 or so. All 3 Milers (Mangan, Rapp, Wyatt)I helped pace beat me though. Scharsu won. Snow covered roads the whole way.
ReplyDeleteLiz ran 2:41.10 in the second NV marathon in 78. I ran the one in Feb. but worked a water station in Dec. What sticks in my memory is a frat guy who ran about 4 hours. As soon as he finished, his 'brothers' handed him a bottle of champagne, which he proceeded to chug. Definitely not the way to replace body fluids.
ReplyDeleteI must have been in the 2:30's then. Time to review my archives I suppose.
ReplyDeleteOk, you made me dig up the archives, damn you Baskwill. You did escort Wyatt, Rapp and me through 20 miles (61 minutes through 10 miles; 1:56 through 20) - "last 6 miles very painful" was my log entry. 2:35 for 6th place. Wyatt was in front of me, not sure where Rapp ended up.
ReplyDeleteSomeone explain to me how two sub4 guys benefit from a marathon?
LTM
I see I was 2:40:52 for 11th place after collapsing over the last 6. I see my pneumonia illness came back after the effort and it took me two weeks to get back to any semblance of a runner. And yes, I held the milers back at the start and we picked it up at each 5 mile mark until the 20th. We tried then too, but I dropped right after. We were in 3rd through 6th place at the time with Scharsu in sight. My log said I didn't expect to finish at all, so I guess I surprised myself.
